IF it's a US Missile launch, the DoD would be better off not making any comment than denying it was one of ours. The DoD's not going to confirm it came from a Boomer or Attack sub as it would be stupid to tell anybody (especially our enemies) the exact location of any sub at any point in time. Given that Vanderburg and even Area 51 aren't that far away, it could be a ASAT or advanced ABM test which we would not and should not broadcast under any circumstances. It may well be the Brits and we would not disclose for same reasons.
If it's not one of our ours or one we knew about, then the DoD knows that too, and trying to hide it would require Presidential knowledge and approval. It would be pretty foolish of the Chinese to fire one off this close, since we could certainly do the same and would be a HUGE provocation (I'd just say all those US bonds they bought are worthless and tell them to GO FISH).
The truth will eventually come out; give the boomer a chance to leave the area first.
