A Colbert County man is in jail on grand jury indictments accusing him of sexually abusing and sodomizing a girl, and then taking obscene photos of her, officials said.
Michael Scott Meadows, 34, 1130 Milk Springs Road, Tuscumbia, is charged with grand jury indictments of first-degree sodomy, second-degree sodomy, sexual abuse of a child under 12 and production of obscene material, Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May said Wednesday.
May said the case against Meadows was presented to last week's grand jury session and the arrest was made Tuesday.
Investigators said the reported sexual abuse began in 2008 when the girl was 8 years old and continued until 2011.
Meadows is a family acquaintance of the girl, authorities said.
They said the girl told a friend what happened, and the information was passed on to family members, who notified authorities.
The sheriff's office began investigating in late December.
According to investigators, the girl said Meadows had sexual encounters with her on several occasions at her house when her mother was not at home and sometimes in his car.
Reports indicate Meadows would take sexual photos of the girl on his cellphone.
May said it is unknown at this time whether he was sending the photos to other people.
"That's something we're looking into right now with an expert as the investigation continues," May said.
Statistics from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network indicate it is not uncommon for victims of rape, sexual abuse and sodomy to know their attackers.
The national network report points out that 73 percent of all sexual assaults are committed by a non-stranger and 38 percent were committed by a friend or acquaintance.
Also, the report indicates, 15 percent of sexual assault and rape victims are under 12.
Meadows is being held in Colbert County Jail on bail totaling $150,000.
First-degree sodomy and production of obscene material are Class A felonies and punishable by 10 years to life in prison upon conviction. Second-degree sodomy and sexual abuse of a child under 12 are Class B felonies and punishable by two to 20 years in prison.
