Personally, I control my music from my Garmin. It is an older style that still has the headphone adapter. However, here are some cheaper ways to control your phones.
I have Kevlar gloves, I haven't tried it with leather, but you can still control your phones, if you: Sweat through your gloves, lick the fingertip, or put a little water on the end of your fingertip from your hydration system.
There are also several bluetooth adapters such as the Jarba Clipper, which will allow you to do basic controls of your iphone, and I assume other kinds.
There are several headphones that have: music volume controls, skip to next and previous track, mute, and even answer the phone.
Until I hit the lottery, I am forced to use the cheap style ways of music and phone controls.
