It is hard to do at first, but gets easier and less scary.
Get the next to the left side of the bike and line up the stand and the spool on the left side( I have spools) and stand the bike up off the kickstand gently until the right side catches the spool then push real hard to get it started. When you are about half way there it gets real easy, but before you go all the way over I push up my kickstand before the bar gets in the way. Once you do this you can just easily let the stand do the rest of the work.
I like the forward facing stand because of room and less likely i will be tripping over it sticking out the back.
