New Toy Questions

get a t.b.i. of a 1 ton, electric fans, exhaust, mild cam, headers, s-10 blazer converter, and put a corvette or billet servo. if you want more put a vortec 350 in it, big cam and carb. get a reg and turn the fuel pressure down, and put a plate kit on it.

if you want ls type stuff put a 5.3 out of a truck. people are even making crazy power with the 4.7s now. i wouldnt do either. if i wanted to go fast i'd put a bbc in it and show all the ls fanboys tail lights all night. it'll make more power and be a ton cheaper.

weak link in that car is going to be the rear end once you start making some power and getting traction.

my buddy ripped out his 305 and put in a LS6 crate motor with some nos mated it to TH700 R4. Was a long time ago but it ran great

Gutting the cat in a earily car like that will not throw a check engine light. The ones that do have a set of O2 sensors er pipe, one is a effiecency montor, that tells the computer how well the cat is working.

Now on your car you have a few things not in your favor.
#1 its heavy
#2 the 305 is a destroked 350 for the most part
#3 its a chevy

Now the good, it is a old dog that can be trught a few new tricks. So cover the basics, more air in, more fuel in, use max engery from fuel and get it out faster. So I would say a free flow air intake system, some headers and a larger exhaust, or go all REO Speed wagon and get some straight pipes with mac daddy glass packs!!!

Now if you want to make some real power for low bucks transplant a LS motor in it with a hair dryer. 900hp and drive it on the street. I am a Ford man to the bone, but you just cant argue with what the LS guys are doing on the cheap!!!

305 and 350 have the same stroke. different bore.

I'm a third gen nut i have an H/C/I 350tpi 91Z and a 89 firebird that is getting a 6.0l ls engine with a turbo

If you want a quick seat of the pants feel thats not expensive change the rear diff gear. It doesnt add horsepower but it will get you off the line quicker. I put a 373 rear in my stang and what a difference. Then maybe longtube headers with exhaust. The blower is a great idea but your talking some coin. I dropped 10 grand on the blower and cams alone on this but when you get into a 450hp car its well worth it.

Best way to make a car with a 305 faster is to attach the 305 to a chain and throw it over the side of a boat. Pull a Vortec 350 out of a junkyard 90's Chevy C/K pickup and start from there.

Big problem with those cars is where the steering gear bolts to the subframe breaks out. Be sure to keep an eye on that.

I had an 88 Trans Am with same motor. It's a TPI (Tuned Port Injection)
Depending on miles and condition I would just put a nitrous kit on it.
I had a nitrous kit on mine with 125/150/175 jets and only ever used the 125.
Back in 88 that car was fast! Nowadays with stock cars pushing 4-500 hp it will be difficult to make yours fast by today's standards. Those F body gms were and still are difficult to mod. A true dual exhaust was non-existent back in 88. I don't know what of anything is available now but the way the cars are made makes it extremely difficult to run a nice clean dual exhaust like mustangs have always had.

Is it a manual or Auto Trans?

Headers, 3" exhaust, intake. Thats about it, not really worth it to get into the motor. Congratz on the new ride have fun with it.

I building a 90 formula right now, should be in the 500hp range with my little P600b procharger.

Cant do a ton to the TBI till you run into its limits, both physically and tuning wise. I put a 355 under mine with built L98 heads, a big cam and some spray it was doing a hair over 540, but off the sauce it was damn near not streetable the way it was setup. and in no way shape or form would pass emissions. which ended up being its demise and my selling it.

Note lack of ridges on tbi, and pod sitting higher up
