HI JUST A CHECK TO SEE HOW MANY ARE GOING RIDING IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA WITHOUT THEIR HELMETS? THAT THE NEW LAW HAS PASS STARTS AT MIDNIGHT JULY THE FRIST
I live in FL and no way would I ever ride without a helmet. Best example I ever saw was a TV commercial where a guy drops a melon at about 4 feet high, melon hits the floor and SPLAT! Takes another melon and straps it into a helmet, same 4 foot drop, helmet with secured melon hits the floor, melon survives perfectly.
That made it perfectly clear to me.
so what.. I would not get on my bike in any state without my helmet! Them da.mn cagers dont watch out for anyone but them selves while chating on their cell phones and what not.
Dont be stupid.. where your lid! I see some squids riding here in TX without helmets. Oh well I just consider that gene pool spring cleaning !!!!
sonnybusa, I'd like to see your ballpark estimate of the percentage of riders that go without helmets after the law goes into affect.
On a visit to Illinois a few years back I took an informal survey. I watched 50 bikes go by and only three riders had helmets on. 94% were helmetless.
I always wear top of the line helmets but on a recent trip to Mrytle Beach I was as stupid as anyone...I got talked into riding the strand without. It felt great and was a lot the novelty of it(NC has helmet law). Everyday it would be really dumb.
10,000 DOLLAR HEALTH INS. YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT ON YOU. YOU MUST BE 21 YEARS OLD ALSO I WENT OUT ON A RIDE LAST NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT ENJOYED MY LAST RIDE WITHOUT A HELMET ABOUT 150 OF US,6 SPORT BIKES,REST HARLEY RIDERS NO HELMETS POLICE ESCORT WAS GREAT AT END I PUT HELMET BACK ON FOR RIDE HOME STILL LOVE MY HELMET BUT IN 99 DEGREE DAY IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC ITS NICE TO KNOW YOU CAN TAKE IT OFF IF YOU WANT TO. THE RIDE IS SUPPOSE TO BE ON TV (BORN TO RIDE) NEXT FRIDAY.
Asphalt-melon bouncing aside, have any of you ever found eyewear or goggles that protected your face from bugs, grit, gravel, seagulls, crows etc. at speeds equal to or greater than 70 mph?
Even just the windrush gets to be unbearable.
I'm thinking, full helmets for Bus driving, no-helmets for V-Twin lounge chair riding.
Lofty Abuse

Riding a motorcycle, especially a Busa, is like Darwinism at light speed.
LA Too bloody right. Survival of the fittest. Helmet = survival
Quick runs down the street, or any short non-highway runs, do it all the time. No biggy. In fact in some ways it's safer because I keep the speed down, and stay even more alert(if that's possible).
Last time I got on a bike without a helmet (about 20 years ago), I completely freaked out. It felt eerily w-r-o-n-g. Was riding pillion with a newby-rider on his new bike. Stooooopid. Got off as soon as I could.
BUT... 'tis your right to trade off personal safety for personal pleasure. If the reward outweighs the risk, etc. Let's face it, that's the equation all of us compute when we decide to go out on two wheels at 80+ MPH (or 130+ MPH on the 'Busa! ;-) amoungst the 70 year old ladies driving Ford Excursions.
I just came back from a 5 mile ride to a friends house, without my helmet.
I don't see how anyone can they can hear better with out their helmet.
I only went 30 mph. and all I heard was wind blowing in my ears, or is that through my empty head?
My wife is a ICU nurse, she has seen it all.
The lucky one's die (life in a wheel chair, or stuck in bed sucks). I *NEVER* get on a bike w/o a helmet and gloves.
Sure, you can say "it will never happen to me" and take the chance by riding w/o one.
It only takes a single crash, just a few split seconds.
Aren't we missing the MAIN point?
The decision on what to ride, where to ride (some places still do not allow ANY bikes-campgrounds, gated communities, etc.) and the right to CHOOSE to wear a helmet should be left up to the INDIVIDUAL ADULT. There are a lot of negative non rider types that only see bikes as a bad thing, wearing a helmet does not change their opinion. We all know that wearing the proper gear is the ONLY way to go. (It's impossible for me to tell a bikini clad babe NO I won't give you a ride)
Like in anything else most riders will follow the crowd, especially new riders. When I was on vacation in Florida most of the bikes I saw on the road were Harleys or other cruisers, and the helmet of choice was a beanie. By now all of those beanies are in dumpsters. So the riding crowd will probably be 90% helmetless.
Whether or not to wear a helmet in Florida will not be serious intellectual decision based on accident facts and statistics. It will be more like "no one wears one so it must be ok to go helmetless", or "its too hot today for a helmet", or "I don't want my riding buddies to razz for wearing a helmet", etc.
