The plates are that size so the speed cameras can clearly read them

Australian plates are much smaller, and heaps of colours and designs.

I can guarantee you that speed cameras, cop car cameras and every other camera reads them just fine. I have no idea why UK plates look like barn doors but if you have any sort of camera made in this century they don’t need to be,
