NZ Deadly Wire Barriers

I saw a number of these barriers on the road back from OKC... Stakes with cable running between them to separate the highway... I think they were in OK and MO on I44
Yes, they just put them up this spring/summer through the Springfield area. At least here you have some run off room before you get into the cable. The NZ setup leaves very little (no) room for error.

When I went down the other day the only thing that stopped my body from entering oncoming traffic was a concrete divider. If it was built with those wires I would have been shredded. YIKES!

Sliding across that thing in a crash would be like going through a butcher's band saw.

On another note, over in Europe while on a trip through Italy, I noticed that their roads are very motorcycle friendly. The guardrails have extra rails centered below them and the ground so as to prevent a sliding motorcyclist from impacting the support posts.

You would have a better chance of missing the post and not the guardrail. Hitting guardrail is like hitting a brick wall, They are pretty sturdy.

We have the same thing here in greenville sc.  3 wires with posts spaced about 10 feet apart.  Every wreck I've seen with em they've stopped the car from crossing over, but I can see how that would be really really bad if a person on a bike hit it. . . I've thought about it a few times ridin down the road.
I've never seen any of these in MN, but to be honest, I just may not have noticed. Will pay more attention to them now.

Oklahoma suppossedly tested these things when the design was coming out, there are stretches in OKC that got them first because of all the fatalaties. Since they have installed the barriers the fatalates have almost completely subsided, the wrecks still occur but the deaths have significantly gone down... Personally, hit a steel pole or a wire I would personally prefer to hit the cable it gives a little and why you hit a concrete barrier Im pretty darn sure its not going to move. As far as the guy that died in the crash... How fast was he going? Was he wearing gear? Did he get caught between them piched or are they trying to say that he hit the cable so hard it sliced him like a cheese cutter, I doubt that actually happenned.

They are putting those up everywhere in Kentucky. Right after they changed the speed limit to 70!

I know the gear would have saved his life right. Cmon man use your head. Body fying into a cheesecutter at 60 - 70 mph. I am pretty sure a set of leathers and a helmet are not gonna save your arse.

yeah i really highly doubt that gear is gonna save you because even if it stops you from being cut up you still run a chance of getting internal injuryies and bleeding

The problem isn't the impact, it's the act of sliding along it. Even leathers won't save you from an impact on a wire. The friction of a steel cable is effectively a saw that will just slice through any gear on ya. Kinda like a friction burn. Even cars that crash into them are sliced pretty heavily...difference is the wires have an engine block to travel through before getting to passengers. Bikers don't have that luxery.

Also, the reason they are installed is not because of install or upkeep costs. It's because they are easier and less expensive to replace a damaged section then other alternatives. Personally, I say concrete divider. I'll let my gear absorb the impact for me.

I guess we'll have to wait for the first few hundred lawsuits to really find out how much testing was done, and whether they are really a cheaper alternative. I'd like to know where the money's going.

We have those things all along I-5 up north of Seattle now. From what I have seen they don' stop shid. They had several cars go through both sets of these things and wind up in oncoming traffic. I had heard a rumor that they were going to replace em. As a motorcyclist I hate em. Those things could tear your head right off. I would think a Miata or similar would be an instant decapitation if you went into them head on. Did you see how quickly the cables separated from the posts in that video.

They are designed to seperate from the post so it looks like they are doing they're job. You guys kill me.... You would rather plow into a concrete barrier and you think that your chances of survival are better.. I completely disagree..... Ask GSXCITE what a simple stop sign did to him...

they're on 75 in collin county (just south), grayson (where I live)has mostly concrete. I like the wires just because I know the po-po's can't cross the median for quite a distance, the concrete ones have gaps for turn arounds every now and again. the wires do work from the accidents I've seen so far. non restrictive during heavy rains, which helps the highway drain faster.

Even with cables there are designated cross overs / turn arounds somewhere in between cables, Designed that way for Emergency vehicles Mandated by Federal Law.
