Oil change

Getting my License here soon and am probably going to pick up my bike either at Deep Creek Marina or J&J motorsports, Both are about 300 miles away. I figure a good way for me to get aquainted to the new ride would be too take some back roads home from picking it up and having my dad follow behind me in the vehicle we took down. He has his license also and has ridden a bike for over 30 years, so if i get tired he cant ake over, but I will be TOOOOO damn excited and probably wont get tired. But anyways my idea was....

Since it is so far away and I know most change the oil at 100 miles...Should I buy some Mobil 1 Dino oil and take it with me to pick the bike up...ride it for 100 miles (or close to) on the way back home pull off the side of the road at a filling station or what ever and drain the oil and replace it, as well as the oil filtert? And also check over all of the bolts, and chain? I think that would be the best for the bike, right?

And do yall think that would be a good way for me to get aquainted with my bike, and be "alone" with not many people around.

Also when yall mean check and adjust the chain what do ya mean?

Also any good break in procedures? I like the one where you beat the #### out of it from the start but dont necassaraly want to be going 120 mph....SO I was thinking about just running 1st up to 50 mph and engine breaking down to 15 mph do that for about 5 mintues (because I know the increased cylinder pressure of the "engine breaking" will help seat the rings) and then jsut ride normal in thrid or forth. What gear do you guys find the best cruising at 55-60? And when in the "cruising" gear I will throttle up and down ever so often as to not stay at the same rpm. but I figure that long non stoop ride will get the thing nice and hot and broken in...

Sound like a good idea guys?

I wouldnt stop to change the oil... just change it when you get home.. if your going to ride it 300 miles home i would highly suggest you make sure you VARY your RPMS. Dont just stay in 6th gear doing 70-80 mph, vary your RPMS and select different gears. The break in by the owners manual is straight foward. You will find that if more people respond to this that it will be a matter of opinion on how to break in the motor. I personally went with the factory break in procedures but some say ride it hard for a 100 or so miles, change the oil and call it broke in... its up to you. It's your ride and its brand new so if you wanna "ride it like you stole it" on the way home then call it broke in then thats on you. Bike cost to much for me to even think about using "someone elses" break in process. Your ride, you do what you think is right. Talk to your dad... if he has been riding for 30+ years, see what he has to say... Congrats on the purchase! Take it easy on the way home with those brand new tires... they WILL be SLICK!

Owners manual doesn't call for the first change until 600 miles. So your ride home is well withing the first change window. Everyone has their own opinion about what's best for their bike. Mine is that changing the oil before 600 miles isn't the best thing for the engine for the same reason you don't immediately put synthetic in it. You need some friction for the parts properly break in. New oil is slicker than oil with some mileage on it.

As TSgt said, don't just get out on the slab and crusie home at 4K RPM, you need to vary the RPM. If you are riding back roads, you should be able to ride normally, just keep the RPM below 6K.

BBgsx...........unless you can find a Suzuli dealer at 100 miles or you take oil, filter and necessay tools and rear lift with you an oil change is going to be tough to do( I really believe in the 100 mile change, even 50 miles since any metal shaving will be in the oil system by then anyway), used this procedure many times and all engines have not been an issue due to wear. Suggest you stick with Suzuki Performance 10w40 4cycle oil and a Suzuki filter with receipt for proof of change for any later warrentee issues. Also suggest no syn. before 2,500 miles)personally don't use syn. at all...that's just me)

Enjoy the new bike

Yeah no syn till 2500 or 3000 miles...I guess I will split and just change it when I get home...I am sure the back roads on the way home will have twisties and up downs, stops, ect...so varying the rpms shouldnt be too dificult. ....My dad I think changed his oil on his new bike (harley ultra classic) at like 500 miles. So I think i will take his advice and just change it when iI get home.

Should be getting it here in the next month! YAY!

I'm not disagreeing with you ... just wanted to mention something.

The reason many change the oil by the first 100 miles ... some go as low as first 20 ... is to get the metal shaving out "before it gets recycled and embedded in the transmission gears, and oil pump etc...".

That quote is from this

while I can see changing oil to get the metal out, you'll be fine  with 300, thats when I changed mine the first time,  then did it again at 600,  did it again at 2500 then at 5000 and thats when I finally got metal out of it scared the hell out of me, went to dealership, they said change it again in 1000 miles if metal they wanted it back in, changed at 6000 no metal changed at 8500 no metal, change it at 11000 this coming weekend and the bike is running great,  hope this info helps.  this is since march of last year

And definitely vary your RPMs in different gears like the manual says
