OK so what about the Katana

(Turbo-Torch @ Mar. 20 2007,19:39) I've always liked the looks of the Kat. but it's just too dated.

Personally I'd go with an SV650, it's lightyears ahead of a Katana in every aspect.  Badass liquid cooled fuel injected V-Twin engine, good brakes (ABS now available), good suspension, nice riding position, large 4.5 gallon fuel tank and it's incredibly light at 363 lbs dry.  Price is very reasonable too.
I agree that the SV-650 would be a perfect bike for all the reasons you state.  But she doesn't like the naked bike look of it.  I try and tell her if she has to put it down while learning, it will be a lot less expensive to repair. ...yadda yadda.....doesn't matter she doesn't like the way it looks.

BTW I LOVE your sig line.  Both of the Honda Turbos are great examples of technology leaps and very desireable.  Rock on buddy.  Way to snag some good metal for the stable.
I think you can get a fully faired SV, or at least a couple years ago you could.

+1

i have a SV along with my busa and i LOVE it.

I had a "03" 750, loved it. Never really got bored with it,but it got me ready for the busa. I really fix it up with a lot of extras( rear hugger, flame corbin seat, white guages, dark turn sig, etc)
"06" was the last year for them. And yes, girls did love the look of it. I got more eyes and can I ride with my Kat than I ever got with the Busa.
Here's a pic of it at the dealer lot after I traded for the Busa. He sold it for 5900 bucks. you could get a new "06" for the same or less.

My Wife learned on a 1997 Katana then had a 2003 - the 97 was a better bike, lighter & quicker.

Main complaints by her:

Top heavy

Heavy period - Very hard for low speed turns

Be very careful downshifting - rear tire breaks loose easy

She is also only 5'3" - 100 pounds

She then had a CBR F4i - great bike / now 600 RR - loves it

Many women in Toronto ride the SV650, and they love it! (does not look as cool or clean as a Katana)

The other bike (older) but really cool, is the Honda 600 Hurricane, really sharp bike (if you can find one)

The only bike I owned before the busa was a Katana 600. It's a bike, so it's fast... just not fast if you compare it to other bikes. The weight is very similar to a busa, so after riding the Kat for a while you will grow into a busa very quickly.

If getting a busa is the ultimate goal, I'd say start on a Katana. If just getting a fun sportbike is the goal... go right for a gixxer 600 or 750.

Of course, this "lady friend" of yours better already know how to ride a bike before she hops on a gixxer!

Katana was a great bike, about 20 years ago. now outdated, heavy and very bad resale value.
Whoever said that BUSA make on Katana platform.... come on .. far from it.
If she absolutely want one, well then find used one cheap. You will be helping selling it for her shortly.

SV or Ducati Monster would be much cooler choise for a lady. Honda VFR is a great bike too.

(Tango1300 @ Mar. 20 2007,16:44) Tell her to look at a Honda VFR.  That will have all the sport looks and the performance beyond a Katana.  You might even like it too.
My wife Kim started out on a kat. Loved it but it was a bit heavy.

All in all, I agree about the VFR. It is an awesome looking machine that handles well, though a bit on the heavy side also. You can't beat that single sided swingarm for the cool factor.

Steve, that's comming to the bash rides one, so you'll be able to check one out (outside of a dealership).

If you're ladyfriend's ultimate destination is a Busa by all means I would suggest a Kat 600/750 as a first bike if the size of the bike is not an issue. The 600 will not get you in an awful lot of trouble. It is a forgiving ride, not like a Gix or Busa where overcompensating for a mistake will be painful. If her destination is a Gixxer then the fully-faired SV650 is the way to go. I would love to have that as a track tool.

The Kat engine (early generation, air-cooled Gixxer) is damn near bulletproof. I had 25000+ when I sold my '99. She'll have fun in the twisties but make no mistake... It ain't a Gixxer  Nice, comfortable ride thats easy on the eye and wallet. It's heavy, but it will eat up some miles (basic sport/tourer), 500 mile days or long commuting are a breeze.

Remember, lots of people bought them as first bikes and have outgrown them. Resale would be a problem if you were buying new, but I'd suggest looking for a '02 - '05 for $35-4000. Heck, a good, low mileage '00 can be had for $25-3000.

The Busa is a direct descendant of the original Katana1100. Before the R1 and then the Blackbird took the "fastest bike" crown, the Kat1100 ruled. Suzuki modeled the hyper-sporttouring concept after the the big Kat, one of the first big speed bikes.

nothing like a 600 Kat, with a bored gixxer 750 motor (798CC or higher) to surprise your friends...and they bolt right in!

(TallTom @ Mar. 20 2007,18:09) Mostly high marks on the Katana here.  Even the low marks I appreciate hearing.  She currently rides a V-Twin Suzuki.  Has always been more of the sportbike type.  She pushes that Volusia around pretty hard for a cruiser.  I have a 4 cylinder Honda Magna (The detuned cousin to the above mentioned VFR) and she LOVES riding that bike.  Took her about 4 hours to get VERY comfortable on it and she was already starting to lean it over in the twisties.  She won't even ride her V-Twin if I'm on my Busa.  She says its like riding alone....LOL.  The VFR is a good bike based on the engine I know works in mine.  I had sort of steered her into more the inline 4s.  The V-4s are kind of a PITA to do any work on.  And I want her very comfortable with doing her own maintenance etc.  If its hard to do she will make an excuse not to.

The Katana seems to be lacking in power and really my advice to her is start out with low power.  She tends to be competitive and I can see her riding past her abilities if she has it there to use.

I have been on the 750 Gixxers and that seems to be about what I can trust her on from her personality to grow in to and not out of soon.  More bike than her skills right now but I will make her restrain herself if she rides with me.  It isn't for me to say but she does ask for my advice and I have taught her how to ride better and she has asked me to help her take the next step up in bikes.  I have to give her the best input I can as a friend.  I steer her away from the liter bikes.  Too much too soon for her.  But she honestly hasn't showed me a liter bike she likes for the looks factor.  She does like the Honda 600 (don't know exactly which series) RR type.  It has the "look" she likes.

She sees herself on a Busa.  Then she rides on the back of mine and gets off of it and says "OK I know this is more bike than I need".  That will change in time but she needs the steps to get there.

Thanks guys.  Keep the well intentioned points of view coming.
Especially if shes all that? then I suggest GSXR750...she knows and feels the instant power...(thats why she likes the sportbikes...) the lookwise? she will understand if she look at em more bikes then she will realizes even the looks of Katana isn't all that...

I also had a Katana 1100. Great bike and provided enough wind protection she may be after. I carved canyons on it to without any problems.

Admin??? O, wait, maybe post whoring....Naw.

Some people can handle the busa from the start if they go slow. Can she handle the weight, respect the power and have enough self restraint to learn the bike? It was an eye opener for me on my first busa , and I had ridden for years. My first wot Thur the gears gave me tunnel vision. God I love it.
