overheating???

Hey guys,
I was letting my busa warm up the other day (with out the choke on) and the thing got up into the red (on the guage) while idling at 1100 RPM's. I wasn't there at the time to shut it down but I suppose that it was up there for 5 minutes or so. The temp came right down when I drove it. So I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen or is it the famed temp sensor problem. Doesn't seem to have done any damage otherwise. Thanks. 220 miles

Had mine go into the red and warning light come on wile I was in traffic once. But went off after I started moving. Has not happened again. 780 miles and no problems that i can find other then tne trans being notchy between 5th and 6th, but I lowered my shift lever and that has helped

Check your fan connection. Take off the left side fairing and look to see if your fan is plug in. I had mine come loose, the only time mine ever hit the read. I connected the fan back up and it hasnt ever heated up passed half guage.

Did you hear your fan runing ? It might be worth the time to check. Mine kicks on a little past half guage.

Sounds like speed is on the right track. I've had my bike idling at extended stops before, and got nowhere near the red.

It typically runs right under the halfway point. During the extended idles, the needle would get to just above the halfway point only. The fan would kick on (you can definitely hear it) and the temperature would come right back down to under halfway.

The fan was on when this thing was showing hot. She will normally idle at just above half. Same goes for running down the hiway. I'm wondering if I have other problems with her. The outside temp was only 75 that day also. Any thoughts???

I had mine idling at fast ideal and I got a strong oil smell and slight smoke coming from it (it was in the garage with the door open)this has happened on numerous occasions. The temperature guage hasnt really gone past the middle butwhile riding the other day (92 degrees) it was like an inferno between my legs especially behind the calf area. Anybody else experience similar happening?-Gixxer in NYC

I did. It did seem to help when I first put it in but I am not sure if its helping now. It could just be getting warmer in Dallas so I cant see the difference anymore.

But I do remember seeing a distince needle difference when I first put the stuff in. My needles readings sound like they are about the same as everyone elses.

what I've notice with all the 20 so bikes I purchased thru the years that they make them rider friendy .Heat shield that block heat from the rider.I take all of it out and the bike runs cooler and it's not that uncomforable. My residents varied from Atlanta, Ga Phoenix, AZ and I am now currently in Tulsa, OK Rob C.

I had my temp gauge flick into the red and 30 secs later went back to half. Basic physics will tell you that water will not heat and cool that quick in an engine running normally so I am tipping a minor bug in the ECM caused it. Had no problems after this.

Mine was running hot. I took it for a spin in the country, keeping it under 5,000 rpms and I came into town and at 2 stop lights the temp light came on. It happened again the next day. I listened & every time it got hot the fan came on (it comes on around 212 and shuts of at 220-230 or so may daeler told me) so that was working alright. Well I took it in and the dealer checked it out and said that everything was ok. I didn't believe him that much but since then I have had it out for much longer rides 100 miles at a shot or so and the light hasn't come on once, maybe it's part of breaking it in?

I sure would not think break-in would have anything to do with the motor over-heating, unless you were on the highway flat-out for several miles. Check the overflow tank on left side of bike if the fan is coming correctly.

There are two possibilities to consider. Perhaps there is air in the cooling system. While full there may be bubbles in the top. This is of course not good, because there are very hot spots in the heads. The other possibility is the ratio of coolant to water. Use a coolant hydrometer to check the lowest temperature the coolant is good for. What does the owners manual say on this? These are just educated guesses based on my past experience with other engines.
