Passing another bike

Hey Fellas... Wanted to see what the general opinion is about passing another bike in the same lane. Is it ok for another rider to pass in the same lane? Some dude screamed passed on a gixxer probably about 6-12" from my handlebar in the same lane. It scared the s%$t out of my fiancee(he had shorty pipes). This happened to me the other day while riding 2-up on the DC capital beltway. I was going about 85mph crusing along a little faster than traffic. I was pretty pissed but knew I'd have to ride pretty stupid to catch this fool and I'm just not willing to that riding 2-up. Thoughts???

No, that is just a dumb azz squidly move. Especially in the same lane no less. I don't even like to buzz people at high speeds even when their in a car , especially not in the same lane.

But I do know the DC beltway quite good and you can expect to find nothing less than some of the dumbest azz drivers all the way around it's 60 some miles of it. I think a lot of the video's on youtube where guys are splitting lanes at triple digits and searching for their maker must be made on that beltway.

Not ok at all !!!
If it's someone you know you and pull up and slow to his speed, wave say and carry on, I've done that. But still make sure the other guy is aware of you coming up behind.
But to just fly by some stranger.... NOT ok !

Not cool. I move into the next lane if I can and if I can't I ride behind them and hopefully they will see me and move over a little to the right and then I will pass. Slowly ...no fly byes

Only ones I'll ever buzz like that would be a buddy and they always know when I gonna do it. One even says it feels like getting passed by this Vette here.

I've was blasted years ago going down 95 and I was in a car about sunset just when auto headlights would start coming on and long stretch not many cars at all at the time. I was just cruising along pretty much zoning because there were no cars in front or back of me for a ways and I noticed what looked to be a car coming up from about maybe 3/4 mile back, didn't pay it any mind until seconds later 2 boys blasted me at what had to be at least a 150 probably more and literally scared the shiat out of me. Had to wiggle in the seat some to make sure there wasn't any squishyness.

So yeah, I can imagine being on a bike and getting blasted like that could for sure be a bad thing if the one being passed doesn't even see it coming. No matter how good of a rider you are there is still that thing called reflexes and when you get startled you automatically flinch/jerk whatever. And on a bike that's not good.

Nope, only if they know you are there and wave you pass, like on a two lane back road. But with multiple lanes, always change lanes when passing anything.

I thought this would be the general consensus. I'm pretty good about checking the mirrors so this guy had to come up pretty quick. I know it was wrong either way but I probably wouldn't have been as pissed if I wasn't 2-up. I mean common, am I really going to catch you on a Busa with a 240 kit riding 2-up when you are alone on a 1k and in traffic no less...???

i see it this way you and your boyz riding okay going back and fourth cause they are not doing a fly by but ya somone your not riding with and don't know..idiot

Only time I'll pass in the same lane is out on a country 2 lane, when the guy in front pulls to the right edge of the lane and waves me by. That is a common and accepted practice in group rides here.
But with someone unknown and not expecting it, no way. Way dangerous for both parties.
I have no problem coming by someone at a way greater speed, but I do it in the far side of other lane.

Allot of people get irritated getting passed that close on a race track let alone getting randomly buzzed on a public road.

Nope not right at all. Sounds like he did on purpose because he was so close to you when he passed. Very dangerous as well.

Never pass in the same lane unless the other rider waves me past. Only exception is small group rides with just friends, when we're pretty relaxed and swapping ride order around from time to time, but never same-lane flybys.

What an idiot. I had that happened to me once. I ran the guy down and flipped him off. I'm glad we didn't pull over because there is no telling what I would have done. I always ride strapped and an idiot like that deserves what he gets for putting my life in danger.

Excessive closing speed is unsafe no matter how many lanes you have or whom you are passing.

Happened to me, too in a very similar way. Except I was riding solo on my Katana 600, and the other bike was two-up - what an idiot!
