pinch bolt problem

Installed Shogun frame sliders and everything went well except for one thing. On the right hand side I torqued the Slider mount bolt to 45 ft lbs. Next I torqued the pinch bolt to somewhere around 15 ft lbs, I am guessing when the allen socket slipped and now I cannot tighten it anymore since the inside of the bolt head is screwed up. I believe it should be torqued to 25 ft lbs.

I am due to get the first oil change next weekend, roughly 300 miles from now, and I thought I would have the dealer replace the bolt then. Any opinions on whether or not this would be ok to ride until then? Anyone know of a good source for purchasing this bolt?
 
Try a local "Fastenal" store... have most fasteners in stock and most in stainless as well.. guessing this "pinch" bolt is part of the slider? (sorry never seen one)
 
Guys I realize you don't know me but If I am smart enough to turn a PC on don't you think I might have enough sense to know the dealer is an option when purchasing replacements parts. :whistle:

Dealer didn't have the bolt and wasn't sure what size it was since Suzuki doesn't say in the manual. Thanks to the recommendation of someone here I went to the Fastenal store and bought the closest thing they had, a M8x40mm 1.25 pitch, stainless steel bolt.


I had to cut the new bolt down about 8mm to make it fit. The difficult part was getting the old bolt out. I bought a Bolt-out kit from Sears and banged the socket on several times but couldn't get a bite. Just when I was about to give up it gave way, probably the prayer I was saying, and I was able to put the new bolt in along with a little threadlocker blue.

So all is well and I can now go to the Barbecue Championship in Lynchburg tomorrow in style.
 
Cutting is required. It took me an hour or so to get the fairings off the first time but now I can do so in about 5 minutes. I used a 1 and 3/4" hole saw on the right side but had to use the dremel to open it up so I used a 1 and 7/8" hole saw on the left side. The left side comes really close to the mounting bolt for the fairing as you can see in the picture.

I taped up gas tank and the fairings with masking tape anywhere I thought they might come in contact with other pieces. I also taped up a large section where the holes would be cut.

I bought a bolt at Lowes to mark the pilot hole with, cut the head off, and ground a point on it. I then removed the bolt from the engine mount, one side at a time, screwed in the bolt, loosely hung the fairing and lightly pressed/tapped on it to mark the location of the pilot hole to drill.

After drilling the pilot hole I used the hole saw to slowly cut out the hole. I would recommend cutting the foam away in the area where the hole will be cut otherwise the holesaw will pull it away and then some. Don't ask how I know this.

Overall it wasn't too difficult to do. I think the scary part is thinking about drilling into the fairing. Just watch on the left side as it does come very close to the fairing mount hole. Also watch the pinch bolt when tightening!!!

There is a post elsewhere that shows how the plastic pins are removed. It is not necessary to remove the 10mm bolt at the bottom of the fairing on either side, just pull out and the fastener will come out of the grommet at that location. There is also a similar arrangement at the top of the fairing and on the side.

Looks nice! I didn't have the nerve to cut my baby, so I went the "no-cut" version. Yea, I just didn't trust myself to take the hole saw to her beautiful sides! Your's looks GREAT!:thumbsup:

i hear ya, still undicided on the cut or no cut myself, can anyone explain to me the pros and cons of each?
