Poor performance from Gen1

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, I am from Johannesburg South Africa and I have a 99 Busa, and I need some help, please.

1st to 2nd it goes like a bullet but I am battling to get past 220km/h this is on a straight flat road. This morning I pushed it to about 9500rpm and the motor lost power went to 2nd and it was fine I suspect it ran out of fuel or fuel pressure. When to motor is hot and you stop and switch off the bike you can't get it to start you need to crank it a few times and then it starts. I replaced the fuel pump and it does the same as with the old pump. where do I start ??

hi man

 welcome here

well landed with your bird ;)

and your ´99 has still the external fuel pump i suppose

if yes have at 1st a look for the fiters in the pump
if they are glogged by dirt .

clean or replace if available (4 u)

but pay attention - there are two different filters available for the ´99 and ´00

or is there a non-fitting airfilter (and box)
or ist the (paper-)filter dusty / a bit / a lot clogged so the engine can´t breathe
same question if you had a K&N
and
why the heck the air box from gen2 ? the gen1 works perfekt in my ´00, so why that change at yours ????

for other issues have a short ;) look at my homepage (translated by google to english) where a lil bit is written about issues etc. beside the manual, that you hopefully have
not yet?
get it a.s.a.p.

Welcome wooden

Could it be an elevation related fueling problem? There probably is a sensor on the Gen1 busa that corrects fueling according to altitude but it might not work as well as required at extreme elevations. I know of a guy in the mountains of South Africa who needed to tune his ZX-14 to run properly at the elevation he rode at even though that bike is supposed to automatically correct fueling for atmospheric conditions. Try running your busa at lower elevations if possible so you can see if the problem clears up. If it runs better closer to sea level, you might need a tune or a map. This other S African friend I mentioned used Autotune with a PC5 but I would only recomend that if you are able and willing to do several top speed runs. I'm recently hearing there are better self tuners but I don't know what they cost.

@Mythos

hmmm

i´m not sure if the "Autotune with a PC5" work with the 16 bit ecu of the ´99 & ´00
any knowledge around here about that combi?

@woodenmonster
my thought is still that there are issues with the fuel flow
(additionally combined with an eventually dirty air filter)

remember the bike is 21 now and if the pump filter(s) never been cleaned this often is the reason for issues.
they appear to be quite susceptible to it - i had that several times in the last few years.

by the way - what then should be cleaned at the same time are the injection nozzles - they also tend to get clogged (a bit).

Reinigings additief mag dalk jou probleem oplos oor ongeveer 1,000 km.

hi guy's

Apologies for my very later reply to my post. It's been raining here for the last three week in South Africa so I only had a chance today to work on the bike. Sooooo I did the following,

Stripped the tank and pump took the pump apart and found that the pump doesn't have to top paper filter, checked the mesh filter for the fuel pressure regulator it was spotless. took out the bottom filter and it was clogged, I cleaned it and got it spotless.

Installed a filter and replaced the current fuel lines as they are not 100% anymore.

I took out the coils and inspected them and found one that is damaged and it is the odd one between the other three coils this one wasn't marked as no III and it also didn't have gasket maker on it like the rest so I went to have a word with the mechanic and he blamed the guy that worked on the bike that has now left the business etc etc In the end he gave me another coil.

Next was the airbox, surprise surprise, they never replaced it when they rebuild the motor 3 months ago. Mechanic to investigate that and give me feedback. I cleaned the air filter as good as I could as a temp solution

I haven't taken it for a proper test ride as the roads are wet and we only finished later with the bike. I hope these were the cause of all my problems.

I will update as soon as I did a test ride.

FYI, I only use the stock OEM filter and never clean them. I replace with new every oil change. You will find a new unmolested filter makes a noticeable difference in performance, as the Hayabusa is thirsty for air flow.

I agree with you on that one, but it was supposed to be replaced when they rebuild the motor and never did that so I am waiting for the shop to sort out their "mistake". and supply me with a new filter.

You change air filters every oil change?

Jeez must be nice I changed my filter last year and I wanna say it was $80 canadian for oem.

I would question the shop that built the motor, considering the condition of the basic OEM parts I would be wondering if they did any motor work at all.

also curious how the spark plugs looked............welcome to the board, look forward to seeing your Busa.

You change air filters every oil change?
Yep, but LOL it takes me around four years to put 5,000 miles on the bike, so it’s no biggie. I have my oil analyzed by Blackstone and after four years and 5,000 miles everything still checks out fine. Could stretch it further if I wanted.

I prefer the OEM filter, believe it does the best job. Also, believe in clean new filters often on any high performance motor.
