Possible problem

OK I love the bike and there has been no problem until now. I have something starting and I am not sure how bad it is. It seems to only happen in second gear but I will pay attention and try to figure this out. I have just over 16,000 miles and overthing seems to be running smoothly.

Although under HARD acceleration in second gear up between 8000 to 10000 rpm I feel what I will describe as a slip. Something does not feel right.

Now I have been on this bike a while and have not noticed anything like this until recently. I have the arble mod in the airbox is the only mod I have done lately. I wonder if my chain is slipping, is the engine cutting out? Is something else slipping? Is this a clutch problem?

Has anyone else experienced this. I am pretty sure this is not wheel spin. But I am starting to worry. It is a limited 2004 model. Everything else seems great except for this. Thanks for any help.

Dan, if it "clunks" when it slips it is definitely your chain, have you checked it for proper adjustment...

the chain itself wouldn't slip...unless the sprockets are sufficiently worn down or WAY out of adjustment. keep an eye on any aftermarket products that are softer than OEM. i.e.- aluminum sprockets.
if the chain is OEM..............

heck, are we to presume that the bike 100% as it was off the show room floor? chain and all? we need some more info to be of any real help to you.

The bike is somewhat stock. I have pipes and a JSD-1 chip, I adjusted the TPS. Besides that, it is stock. The front sprocket is worn. So I have on order new sprockets and chain. I hope that fixes it...heard that some people are having problems with second gear. I hope the dogs aren't round and the shifting fork isn't bend. Hopefully just a worn sprocket. By the way I am now going to the 16/42 for the sprocket set up. I hear that is a kick in the ass. I will soon see. 17000 miles, this thing better last another 17000. Talk to you soon.

I highly doubt it is your sprocket. If it was, it would jump in any gear. Besides...if your sprocket is bad enough to slip..it would feel like much more than a "slip" I would think...

I, too, have heard about occasional issues with second gear. Let us know what you find.

i am having the same exact problem but mine is happening in 2nd around 6-7 but if i shift high in first to second and when in second my rpms are past 8k it wont do it. everyone i talk to thinks its the shift fork.. how hard are these to replace. i heard both ways a. you can drop the oil pan and get to it. b. you have to split the casing. anyone with any info i would highly appreciate it. and how much $$ am i looking at for a fix. mines a 04 with 12500 on it but its been geared since day one, gearing is 1 down 2 up...

p.s. didnt mean to steal your thread but i think we are having same problems let me know if you find out what it is.

I am thinking it could be a shifting fork as well. It seems to slip for a moment then get back to it, like maybe a dog is rounded. Only seens to happen in second gear. Seem like this is going around a little. The other day I had my son on the back and not hitting it hard and it did it. And A week ago I was getting on the freeway not hitting it hard but going up a steep on ramp and it did it. Something is going on inside.

i just talked to a guy here in indy, at fastlane cycles. his name is mark (owner). he said its happening lately. he's got like 4 of them doing same thing. he is looking at one tomorrow and trying to figure out whats going on. does anyone know r&d transmissions phone number by chance. i need to get ahold of them to see how much its gonna cost for back cutting etc...

is it the 2nd gear only? because Mine was doing the same thing under hard throttle it felt like it was slipping and i couldn't get over 130-140 mph. It was the fuel pump and I had 11,500 miles on mine.

It IS the shift fork! You are describing the exact same thing that happened to my 02. I took mine in to the dealer, they torn down the tranny and replaced the shift forks plus first and second gear under warranty ( I paid to have 4th,5th, and 6th gear ) So sorry to say you have some down time ahead of you.

I have a 2006 model bike with 3489km on the clock and she too has started this 2nd gear problem, 1st time it happened I had grabbed a fistfull of throttle whilst I had my 16yr old daughter on the back, seems to me to almost be an electrical problem though as for a split secone no drive the an instant later full drive and enough to point the front wheel skywards unintentionally, she loved it and i almost #### myself. Not something I would do purposly with a pillion onboard. So she is 7 weeks old and has developed this problem, guess i'm about to find out just how good/bad Suzuki's 2 year warranty is, fark i hope its an easy fix, i need the bike for transport to and from work

Will keep you posted.

Shake hands and wave, cause' second gear is leaving

I have found something else out on inspection. The rear hub where the sproket atached is loose. Hmm what causes that. I have it into the shop now so they can check that out. I think all those little rubber triangle peices in the hub need replaced. I am waiting to hear back.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if that is your problem....worn out cush drives (those rubber inserts that you're talking about). If so, easy and inexpensive fix. If I were you, I'd just have them replaced and see if that was you problem before you have them tear into your tranny.

Well I think I have it fixed. I got new sprockets and chain and that seemed to do it. The front sprocket and chain were so worn that the bike was getting scary to ride. So now I have the 16/42 set up and first gear is a rocket!! Bike seems good as new now.
