Im looking at a 2005 sd power stroke anyone have any input on these rigs..ive never owned a diesel and need you guys to hold my hand

Pick up a copy of "Diesel Power" magazine. There are tons of write ups for that truck and the other heavy duty domestic diesels. Personally, the only way I would buy one is if I was set up to run it on WVO (Waste vegetable oil) biodiesel.

Less moving parts, better fuel economy, more power, easy to get more. Keep looking.

I love the powerstrokes man... just gave my 2001 F350 PS to my mother and bought a used 2004 PS F250.. They can pull till the ends of the world... only thing I would prefer to have different is the motor... they no longer put the 7.3liter in em but instead went down to a 6.0liter which now has smog on it??? kinda screwy.

not much difference in the F250 or the 350 but a couple hundred pounds of towing. 200lbs. diff on the hitch and 600 lbs diff for a 5th wheel or gooseneck.

You will not be disappointed in the purchase. Fuel mileage is also pretty reasonable in both trucks when empty and while towing. Best I have gotten in the '04 so far is about 617 miles to a tank. about 22 mpg with the 30gal tank(using 26 gallons).

Let me know if you want to know anything else or you can PM me for specifics.

the bottom line the duramax is by far the better diesel truck you can get, we have two now, did have three, no way would i own a powerchoker after a duramax or even a cumming, also remember dodge is losing cumming, there going to ford. the powerchoker will soon be dead, where as the duramax will be getting bigger better stronger. seriously go with a duramax by far the best.

We aren't too far apart pusher, you wanna have a pull off? I could pull your Duramax to California by the time your turbo spooled up

this is a 2005 2500 with 39k miles the dealer wants 26k, i was told by a few that 6.o is better than the 7.3, but in 08 the added alot of smogg crap because the 6.0 wasnt all that clean. the truck has a lift and sis on 37s(a bit bigger than i wanted but its sooo sexy) thanks guys keep it comming

I have a lot of experience with Diesel trucks, I'm on my 5th in the last 10 years. In my humble experience, backed up by owning 2 of them, the 6.0 PSD is a raging pile of horse dung. The 7.3 was great, the 6.4 is supposed to be better, but I haven't owned one of those. I switched to Cummins in 2007, but I only like the 5.9, the new Cummins (6.7) is smogged within an inch of it's life.

My Ultimate Dream Truck: 5.9 Cummins, with a Chev/GMC Allison behind it, in a Ford body/chassis.

FYI, I am looking at trading the Dodge for a 2008 6.4 Ford PSD today....I'll have an informed opinion shortly.

I owned a 2004 and a 2005 6.0 PSD, both of them left me standing on the side of the road more than once. Going back to Ford is a huge leap of faith.....

So then why are you going back? Haven't you learned your lesson? Are you nuts?:rulez:

In all honesty, there is only one reason: The back seat in my 3500 Ram is a literal torture rack. I actually rode back there for the first time last week, and now I feel like I may be guilty of child abuse for making my poor kids sit back there. I looked at an 09 Mega Cag Dodge last night, but while the interior was nice, I still think the Ford's was nicer.

As to the Ford...I loved my 7.3 PSD's.....hate the 6.0's....rolling the dice on the 6.4.

You just got done saying that they left you standing on the side of the road more than once. 82K on my 06 Cummins and it hasn't even hiccuped once. Still running the original tires as well. I haul a 40' fifth wheel trailer and last trip was about 6000 miles. I am at 500 HP and about 850 ft. lbs of torque with only simple bolt ons. Can you tell that I am a believer?

The 6.0's did...but the 7.3's were fine. No argument from me on the Cummins, I still think the 5.9 is the class leader, but the Dodge body/interior just isn't up to snuff with the Ford and Chevy.

a lot of years of racing and 30K per on our tow rigs... Freightliner with either the big Cummings or Caterpillar with the Allison auto was the economic hero! low costs to run but a bit high initially.. All the other stuff had its pros and cons

International harvester also made a killer tow rig..

Ford (4 years?): probably the most durable truck we ran
Chevy (at least 8 years): Easily the best riding truck and best creature comfort but fragile..
Mopar stuff (2 seasons): kind of in between on everything.. avg power, avg ride, avg truck..

All this is based on older trucks...we all know they can not leave well enough alone anymore.. if it works well, the screw it up...

what were this issues that made you break down, erg, injectors???

2 turbo failures, 2 ECM failures, 1 flex plate/torque converter weld failure, and at least 3 coolant leaks/ingestion issues.

Bone stock trucks, no mods/chips/tuners/lifts/etc.

Wow I hate to see the pain from that... I have had good luck so far... the 7.3 is still running strong at 278k miles only had to replace an alternator and a CPS.

I agree chevy makes a very nice comfortable riding truck but that is about all it is good for..

Dodge... I've had more problems with a dodge than anything.. still nothin major but enough time in the shop to warrant buying a different brand all together.

If I could have afforded it, I would have definitely purchased an International to roll around in.

man dodge if you want a work truck chevy is a cadilac just cruise around in ford is good but the 6.0 is better...the options for diesels are limitless these days worse thab a busa hahahaha
