i have always been into guns, and my Billy The Kid tour has inspired me. i think i might try to get into the art of fast draw. im going to do some research, but i think i can see a Ruger vaquero in my future.
do any of yall shoot fast draw?

Well in the military (or at least the Marines) they teach us to shoot three shots from a draw in under 2.5 secs. My fastest was 1.7 with a 3 inch group about 4 inches away from bullseye. That is also with a crappy holster we have to uncover first and with a 9mm Baretta lol.

But I have always toyed with replicas and trick draws. Broke a few televisions sets twirling and flipping those things around too

How cool!
I do not know you personally, but through here/your posts and your daughter's memorial page. I can definitely see you doing this!
Just don't practice in front of the television!

Should be fun. I think i found some interweb resources a few years back when i was taking a look at that stuff. I know one of the big rules is when practicing keep the thing unloaded. :)

I can see the headlines though. Russ the traveling biker import riding gunslinger coming to a town near you.

Just in points match competitions. 6 shots total, 3 targets 2 shots each 3 different distances.

Sounds like fun, & a good practical skill, nobody wants to be second when its heater time:laugh: I like the Bisley, bought a Blackhawk cuz it was cheaper.

Well I know just a bit. Never really competed in them because I was shooting IPSC and Steel Challenge events but Cal Eilrich is a very famous person and won more than anyone in that arena. Check out his vids. >>>> Hit 'Em Fast & The Art of Fast Draw - Instructional Videos you will learn much from him.

I met this man twice in my life, both were short just a few hours but the time and stories told by him were really great.
Arvo Ojala
Arvo is considered to be the one who really 'invented' the art of 'Fast draw' as well as patenting the first 'fast draw holster'. Almost every person you ever saw fast drawing a pistol in cowboy movies or shows learned from Arvo.
Some more on him:

The world of Fast Draw and the collecting that goes with it is phenomenal.
Some high quality hand boned SA holsters can cost thousands!
The guns forget about it....

Another fast draw expert is Bob Munden. A more modern shooter but still holds the record for fastest draw with accurate shots.
Bob Munden

There are shorter vids on him but this is a good watch..

Good luck with it. It can be very addicting and get expensive quick.
And oh yeah we need pics of your new Vaquero :)
Stainless or Blued?
5 1/2 inch or 7 inch?
.45 long colt or .357?

Decisions decisions decisions ?

And don't rule out Beretta or other makers as there are some great single actions out there.

From reading I did a few years ago, very few old-west duels were won by the quick draw artist, which is supposed to be a Hollywood invention. Duels were won by the steady and sure of hand, who took the time to make the first shot count.

That's not to say that somebody well practiced in the techniques of the quick draw wouldn't have a particular advantage.

very cool, but like blanca said i can see this running into some serious $$$$

:cheerleader: i found out one of my ex-presidents was a state champ.

i was going through my abate archives and found some news paper clippings of Dale Whittiam shooting in some state comp.

 fast forward about a week....i hunt him down and corner him about it.

 he still has his old rigs! all the stuff for it, 3-4 guns. and .... get this.. he's willing to not only hook me up with some guns but show me how to shoot too!

i am looking forward to my 1st lesson.

 Dale is one of those pop 4 balloons in under one second fellas. :firing:

very cool! :beerchug:

i remember some of the men in the community when i was a kid laughing about one of the guys shooting his TV practicing his draw while watching a John Wayne movie
