Ratcheting shudder

Today while hammering 1st gear the rear of my bike made a shuddering ratcheting shake. Can the Cushdrive slip? I thought at first it was the tire shaking but there is definitely a hammering feel to it when it does it. Everything else feels fine. The bike accelerates like a banshee but this has me very concerned.

Could it be the chain jumping the teeth on the rear sprocket? I have about 30mm of freeplay in the chain and its two month s old.

I will adjust it in the morning and try again.

Rear wheel horse power and torque ? Could be sprocket. I guess I take it a lot easier than I think. 11.5K, basically no chain maintenance. I have all the front and rear sprocket teeth and they look good with no noticeable cracking and the chain looks good too. Just used chain guard for the first time because it was starting to clank. Clank gone.

11.5k with no chain maintenance?

you got more ballz than me my friend... i've seen to many pictures of cracked cases to neglect my chain... i'm paranoid about it and keep it clean, lubed and adjusted all the time.

(Tango1300 @ Apr. 16 2007,22:30) I lube and clean my chain all the time... maybe that is why my stock one lasted 24K miles!
I'd think that if your chain was skipping on the sprocket that your sprocket would be showing signs of wear...

i think you may have some rounded gear teeth and a bent shift fork. this is what happend to mine. get on it in second go then slip then grab on and off a bunch of times really fast.

all i know my sprockets and chain were done at 13k the first time and now 11k later my chain is done. and i cleaned it and lubed often

Both sprockets were replaced when I replaced the chain last month. They are steel and of great quality... I am just thinking that the chain must be more loose than I thought. I will adjust it this morning and report my findings.

I am however looking to get an aluminum 42 tooth Vortex

Replace all three: front,rear and a new chain,might I suggest GoldenChild (Cloud9Motorsports).

Adjust every tire change as needed. So far only two adjustments.

One month, you running 500 horses or what ? Hopefully it's just an adjustment. This happens on new chains.

I wish I had 500 Horses... I just put 2200 miles on my bike this month alone!

I adjusted it and so far there has been no more problems.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Tango with that long distance ride you just did, if your chain is new... it probably just stretched a little on your trip and needs to be adjusted...

Just as a safety precaution I always lube my chain at -least- every other time out. I thoroughly clean my chain every weekend if I'm commuting on the scoot throughout the week.Other wise I clean it about every 2nd or 3rd weekend if I'm just riding it a night or two each week.

Adjustment only makes sure the tension is correct and the chain is aligned.

Lube only keeps the chain healthy longer and keeps it from binding allowing it to play nicely with the sprockets.

Dirt, if allowed to build, will defeat both of the above precautions and normally in a catastrophic way.
