So we have some defintions...  Doesn't seem to help a whole lot huh?  Maybe some quotes?

-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Men are respectable only as they respect.

-Henri Frederic Amiel
There is no respect for others without humility in one's self.

-Baltasar Gracian
Respect yourself if you would have others respect you.

OK, Maybe respect from a different direction....  Must respect ones self before you can respect others...  Likewise, respect must be given to be recieved.  Respect beyond basic civility to your fellow human and basic politeness to the same is not something given away, it's not something taken, it's not something you can demand, it's not something you can obtain through wealth or intimidation.  We need to learn that to get respect you have to give respect, simple as that.

-Never look down on anybody unless you're helping him up.†
— Jesse Jackson

A man who lies to himself, and believes his own lies, becomes unable to recognize truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing respect for himself and for others. When he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love, and in him, he yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest form of pleasure, and behaves in the end like an animal in satisfying his vices. And it all comes from lying to others and to yourself.
-Fyodor Dostoyevsky

-This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.
~ William Shakespeare ~

-"Never esteem anything as of advantage to you that will make you break your word or lose your self-respect."
-Marcus Aurelius-

"When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everybody will respect you."
-Lao Tzu-

-"Respect commands itself and it can neither be given nor withheld when it is due."
-Eldridge Cleaver-

OK OK, Do I have a freaking point?  Yeah it's around here somewhere...  Oh yeah...  You cannot Demand respect, you cannot gain respect at gunpoint...  To be respected you must first respect yourself, and be respectful of others...  It's just that simple...

NO I am not a genious...  I can just cut and paste...  Besides...

"Any Idiot can quote a genious"

Someone been getting to you Rev? Why the topic? Just curious...

I agree...to get respect, you must first have respect (for yourself and others)...

I do find it amusing that in my own travels through this life, I find those demanding respect are those that I least align myself with...they're either arrogant and egotistical, or they just like talking a big line and have very little to back it up beyond the initial demand...hrmmmm.....

Where did this topic come from?

What comes around goes around.

If you want respect, you have to earn it, and one of the ways to earn it is to give it

If you want to be a good leader, you must first become a good follower

If you want to be a good father, you must learn how to be a good son.

Keep your friends close, and keep your enemies even closer.

Yeah Rev.. Who took your toys away at gun point?

hmmmmm... interesting. I don't feel respect is anything that is even needed by humanity. to me, it is a mirror FROM others of your worth, and I would never want to compare myself against others for my own value or worth. That is in you, your heart and soul. But I understand some peoples would search for it as validation to fill a void left by ineffectual parents. Gang members where gang becomes family and you need 'respect'. I don't need someones respect and I hope they don't try to 'earn' my. I love them as a brother reguarless of their deeds, past and future.
So, I feel respest is a castle built on sand

Respect is a powerful tool, respect is a great weapon as well. With no respect, one cannot truly see his opponent. To see your opponent is to respect your opponent. Proper respect given, is your opponent anyone other than yourself?

This is the why of it Bro!
Some new FNG at work I had to uh... Educate... Just a case of an ex officer, storming into my office while I am on the phone with a client, telling me how to do my job. It was inapropriate so I told him to step outta my office and I would talk to him when I was I was done... We'll apparantly he was still thinking he was active duty, or that I am going to give 2 shits about his previous rank here in the civilian world. He isn't in my chain, he is not a senior member of my team, hell I am senior to him except in years... I had made a point of treating this FNG well initially but it seems he decided he needed to flex.
I step outside to have a smoke and FNG follows me out. He starts bitching about my disrespecting him... I basically told him that until he proves himself worth a damn at his job, and as part of the team he could go Fug himself...He's not worth a damn... Whooo, he was pissed he went to the HMFIC and raised a poop storm... Best part was he was told to get out of his office as well. Then the HMFIC came and asked me to be gentle with the FNGs before they get freakin ulcers.....

Thats where this originated... This was the problem... I sent it to the FNG via Email....

Sounds like you handled it with a level head REV! Good job! Since we're not out killing wild buffalo for supper anymore, we seem to take it inside whereever we are: competing at work. Alpha male or not, that guys needs to learn about OFFICE POLITICS in reality. I don't see that as respect but order of duty at work. We're PAID to follow these work rules. Good for you, showing him the light.
