Respect...or the lack of it.....

So @Red05 here we are in a thread started about the lack of respect, dignity and manners...

Not long ago I was asked by my neighbor who is a school teacher if I could drop off a large object to him at his school....I told him no problem and did so...

I went at lunch time so I wouldn't disrupt his schedule and what I saw in that short time at this school kind of shocked me.....students were outside here and there and I saw high school aged girls wearing a bikini top and short (short) shorts.....others were wearing torn and ratty shirts where you could see their under-garments....

There were a whole bunch of them out at the smoking area puffing away which I thought was illegal for kids their age to be doing. As I was going down the lane behind the school with my pick up to access his class room, kids wouldn't move out of the way on the road and when I shouted politely to move out of the way, I was given the finger or more of them walked into the road further obstructing me....even when he came out to tell them to get out of the way, they were in no hurry whatsoever.

All I could think about is one day these will be in charge of something or be expected to do some job where they have someone's life in their hands.....

Scary...

I remember being at their age, we were no angels but we respected others because if we didn't and it got back to our parents (mostly our dads) drastic action would be taken and in a real hurry with zero empathy.....in my day, and you disrespected a teacher or elder, you were automatically at fault not the other way around.....but in the same breath, if someone messed with you, my parents would lash out vengeance like nobody's business....

If you lived and worked for a while (not military) overseas, especially Asia, there is still a lot of respect for seniority, age and authority.

The school you refer to, if that happens everywhere, will eventually cause the failure of democracy.

There are still good private schools here, where students wear uniforms and they will be expelled for that kind of behavior.

I'm generally referring to public schools and the average youth in my region although I'm certain this is manifested all across North America by what I see and read.

I get that other countries have stricter lifestyles but how their youth interact is not readily available to us westerners.

I know when my kids were smaller and arguing over something trivial, I really would have liked to insert them into some of the villages in Bosnia to make them appreciate what they had...

I went back to school after having been out of school for 20+ years. I was old enough to be the dad of pretty much all my classmates. I would get dressed to go to school. At least jeans and a collared shirt. Showered, hair combed. Always came to class on time. If I'm being given this privilege of a free education, the least I can do is represent my appreciation. So med school starts everyone off in the basics. Then in year two you branch off into your respective applied sciences. And we also got placed into study groups. So here I am in study groups. The girls are in short shorts, no bra, etc and they hang out as they are huddling in researching our answers out of our collected reference books at the center of the table. They were never disrespectful towards people, in fact most were very bright and sensitive. But dang they sleep in the breakrooms, sleep in study groups, sleep on benches on campus. In year two things start getting a little tougher. More memory challenges and exercises. More study groups. More braless swaying. More cross legged short shorts.

I was like "Look away....look away.....I'm dad to them. You learn concentration skills. Lol.

Mercy some of those girls!!

I just don't get the lack of humility some of these girls have when they wear some of the stuff they are wearing....some of them look like they should be working a street corner......no young teenaged boy full of hormones will take them seriously as human beings.

My neighbor is a high school teacher and he says it's out if hand but because the school won't implement a dress policy there's nothing he can do....he said sometimes he's uncomfortable around these young women with the way they are dressed and the parents don't seem to care as long as she's attending school. His wife is also a school teacher and she said she'll say something to her students...sometimes they adjust their way of dressing and other times they don't...

Well to be fair here. This place gets hot as hell here. Wearing as little as possible has its practical applications. And on a school campus it does take on an heir of family and safety. So I sort of get the relax and learn aspect. Things changed in those 20 years it has been for me.

But in high school?

Remember all those horny little boys running around?

It's no hotter now than when I was in school and now they have air conditioning....we weren't allowed to be running around like that.

I was reflecting on my observations here. I'm not condoning what you see as OK. Scanty dress here is pretty common thing when people want to stay cool.
I can see this at a beach or at someone's home.....

But in a school and not only high schools but elementary schools....

It gets hot here too for a little while.

Bill, I graduated in 2003 in the Dominican Republic and can tell you that what you describe about your school years, was my experience too and I’m assuming our school years were 20-30 years apart so, I feel that’s more of a 3rd world country type up bringing these days and 1st world countries have left that behind and are more like what you recently saw at that school. I can tell you if one of us disrespected a teacher, we got double punishment. First from the principal who had permission from our parents to kick our butts and then from dad once he got a call from the principal. I was a fairly quiet kid and can only recall one whooping from dad because, every other time, all he had to do was give me and my siblings “the look” and we already knew to get our act together. I live aceros from a high school and see the same behavior you describe, which makes me cringe. There is no way in hell my daughter would be going out in public dressed like some of these teenagers.

What I see more of here in southwest Missouri from the younger generation is apathy; rudeness basically by not caring. I don’t get direct disrespect; I’m 6 feet 205 and really fit; that might help lol. What I do see is a lot younger people totally disconnected usually by their phone but even while working, say at a mini mart or gas station. Just putting out an obvious by attitude of “I don’t want to be there”, as if somehow that’s cool or maybe it’s just easier.
Occasionally I run across just the opposite in young people and it’s really refreshing.

Yep. This was me as well. Schools had full endorsement by the parents for "Any meetings with the board of education", as necessary. Which would be followed up with additional groundings at home.

Chyt worked pretty good for us!

I 100% agree! My siblings and I came out pretty alright, if I may say so myself. Today, I can say I’m thankful for my parents and the direction they provided.

I grew up the youngest of 3. My brother is in the middle and 11 years older than me. Same parents. Same upbringing. I grew up watching him take beatings and constant groundings by M&D. He seemed to thrive on misbehaving. So sometimes people are just born not right. Lol

There was one time I thought Dad killed him.
My brother was like 16. By that age he was starting to get tall. And he was athletic. Dad is 5'9". Built like a fire hydrant. He could take of business physically.

My brother was in his usual trouble over something. Smarting off as usual. Dad stepped up to get serious. My brother in that moment decided his manhood wasn't going to tolerate dad another second. My brother drew his arms up both hands into fists, and started to cock his right arm for launch.

Dad without skipping a beat, decked him with a closed fist hook. My brother went down like a sack of potatoes. I thought he was dead.

His summer was spent digging out the main water line to the house because there was a leak that needed to be located. That was about 200 feet.

He still would rather take a beating than comply with rules.

Last actual convo I had with my brother, he was calling from jail, seeking help getting bail. Repeat offense of B&E. This time it was felony B&E with violence.

So yeah some people just won't ever give up at being disrespectful.

I’m the oldest of 3 and my, 3 years younger brother, was the wild one getting whoppings left and right. Thankfully, my parents approach at disciplining him worked for him and today he’s married, raising 6 children and involved in church. I agree with you though, some people are born to live their life’s always in trouble, regardless of how good of a family they come from. At times, mom would feel it was her fault my brother was the way he was and I would always tell her, mom, all 3 of us have been raised by same parents and under the same roof yet we are all different.

I was a farm kid so there was lots to keep me busy and even more if I pissed off the old man....

But, in my day, the teacher was right.....period.....if I mouthed off at the teacher, I went to see the vice principal who had the strap...you got a couple whacks with that then your parents were called....and the last thing I wanted to see was the old man rolling into the school in his 'ol F100 with "that look" on his face.......

It never went good from there, he wouldn't say anything (didn't have to) but would drive me home, take me out to where something needed to be dug, cleaned or shoveled and walked away....no end timing was given except usually my sister would come out to tell me dad says to come to supper now...I'd eat supper, be asked about homework and if I had none-back to the chore I was given until bed time....

Kids today would drop dead if that ever happened to them, I have found that kids run their households these days. They either run their parents or are "latch key kids" and their parents are too busy for them allowing them to get into mischief or wear the kind of clothes I am describing because they have no positive female role model.

Crazily enough, if I go out to do some work on my property or garage, it isn't too long before I attract the neighbor's kids...last spring I found a couple old lawn more engines and when they came over, I handed them some tools and told them to take them apart but remember how they go back together and if they do it right, we'll start them up....they did and they started.....then we donated them to the local high school shop class.....I asked their parents if they could go with me to drop them off and the kids got the full tour of the shop class...

My brother finally burned through all his immediate family members. Mom being the last hold out. Mothers are going to love their children in their own ways. She for years, put on the blinders. I finally decided to no longer shield and protect her from him. It took about a year before he burnt that house down. After managing to get about 15K out of her.

Our mom, being the last parent, passed 3 years ago. Because of the way the laws presided over probate, any named parties have to be located. The Will was changed in 2016 by mom specifically named him, leaving him $10. Noone knew this as it was sealed until death.

Because of that, I as the Executor had to use all means recognized by the courts to locate him. That took a year. To serve him a copy of the Will. He was tracked down to the Philippines, and served at his residence. Pictures were provided to the courts as proof.

He's living as he deserves to there.

He as expected contested the Will. Lost the contentment.

I sent him his $10.
