Rocket III to Busa

Ok guys.. don't flog, stone or beat me down.

I had nothing to do with the articles claiming the rIII is faster than the Busa..hahaha

the name is George, and I just signed up on the forum this evening.

Im a current owner of a RocketIII.. I love my cruiser,, well because Im old uhhm er, (41) my body hurts, and after trying to contort my body to fit semi comfortable on a 650 Ninja for a 50 mile ride... well.. lets just say thank god for vicadin...by the end of my 50 mile ride.. My Wrist, My degenerative disk in my lower back, and my Knees were all jacked up...

But I sat on a Busa the other day.. and Maaaan.. Im really concidering one.. I love the sports bikes.. but my body really isn't made to be that bent up and cramped..

the busa seemed to stretch me out a bit more...

So I have a few questions?

Im a pretty new rider.. Just got my licence the begginning of this summer, I already went from a honda 1100 straight to the 2300cc Rocket III

Ivd got about 7K mile on my RIII in 3 months.. many of those miles through lots of twisties out here in socal.. I love to ride..

I know by now some of you have had a chance to try the RIII...and Ive scanned through some other post about a busa being a good first bike?.. well this post is geared kinda toward those two areas.

Coming from the RIII do any of you think that I will have a hard time adjusting to the Busa power?

Im looking into the sports bike because I do enjoy riding through twisities, and although I manage with the R3.. Im looking for that sportsbike handling?

how is the busa as far as riding posture? Im 5'11" 180lbs.. and like I said.. bad back, bad knees.. and aparantly weak wrists..hahaha

I notice I really had a lot of weight on my wrists.. and with my knees so scrunched up.. I could barely move them by the end of the ride...

OR AM I JUST TO OLD AND NEED TO STICK TO MY CRUISER... lol

I think I can make arrangements to test ride a used one that Im looking forward to doing this week some time..

Welcome to the board!!

Not sure how much this will help you, but here is my experience.

I bought my first sportbike in 2001 (Blackbird). The Bird was very comfortable for me. My legs were a little cramped on it, but overall I had no complaints. I now have a 2008 Busa, and she has an even better riding position for me than the bird had. My legs feel like they are a little more stretched out, and I don't feel like there is any more weight on the bars than I had on the Bird. My back is fine as well after 2+ hours of riding without taking a break. I too have a pretty banged up carcass including 3 fractured vertebrae from my football days. I am 6-6, 300 lbs.. (I should only be about 280 lbs., but I have a pretty good famine storage system in place right now !!!)

First  of all welcome to the oRg..
Post those pic's if you got them and remember its not what you ride, its that you ride!
Should have some answers to your post very soon! I imagine being so young (40) some of the regulars are going to chime in with some great pointers about the Busa and the long/short haul.

Hey the Rocket III is faster from 0-60 than the Busa is. That bike is nothing to be ashamed of for power. I'm also and old fart with bad body parts. It took me a few mods to make my bike fit me. I was only good for an hour or so at first. Now I can go hours with no problems.

But you don't have a big shock for power difference...until you twist the throttle in the triple digits. The Busa is amazingly fast at warp speeds.

Welcome to the 4m.

Get the Busa, you will not be disappointed. Its a docile machine in traffic but can go to warp speed easily after 5K. It has such a good aero package interstate rides are breezy at best. Not like your a parachute when riding a cruiser.

Suggest using your abbs to support your upper body & keep weight off your wrists. Raise up the bar clamp with spacers. Have your seat modded by Tobin here on the 4m. Butt lower & bars higher will keep your back straighter.

I'm also 41 years old and have been suffering from lower back pain since 1989. I got my '07 Busa last September 26 and I had nothing but praise to tell you. I had a '01 R1 for 2 years and traded it in for this one. You can't beat the comfort on the Busa. By the way, I'm 6' and 185lbs. So far, I have 5800 plus miles on it. Last Tuesday, I did 504 miles in almost 12 hours. I only stop for gas and restroom break. Yesterday, I did a little over 11 hours but only able to do 427 miles. It was mostly backroads. I didn't even stop to eat. As soon as I fill up and did comfort stop, I go until the fuel is about half a tank. That's the kind of riding I do. One thing I can tell you, when I'm on the Busa, I feel like Superman. I don't feel any pain while riding and even afterwards. Not even the next day because I just think of the ride that I did. The Busa is a therapy for me. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I also did 825 miles on my R1 one time. It took me 14 1/2 hours to do it. The Busa, I feel like I can ride over 1000 miles in 24 hours.

+1 on using your abs to support your upper body. doing this WILL take the pressure off of your wrist and it wont put any additional strain on your lower back. there should be very little weight on your hands and ur elbows should always have some bend to them. locked elbows means ur totally supporting your upper body with your arms/wrist.

like others have said, there are a ton of mods you can do to make the busa fit your riding posture/comfort level. lowering pegs, tobin seats, bar risers, etc. i can assure you that u will not be disappointed if ya do purchase the busa. might take a couple hundred extra to get the bike setup to where you want it but it will be very rewarding in the end!!!

Get the busa, you will love it. I did a ride with some org members yesterday of about 400 miles. I was a little stiff since I have not been on the bike in two months, but I had a blast. The bike will be comfy for you with a few often done mods. by the way

thanks for the reply guys.. I just need a general idea of what I might be getting myself into..hahaha

Im not really a "fast and furious" type but I do love torque and horsepower.. I have too much to live for and love well..atleast like my life enough to where I USUALLY avoid doing stupd things..hahaha...

Ive learned to respect the power of the RIII and Im sure I can do the same on the Busa?

it appears that nothing has changed on the busa from 99 to 07?.. I believe the one Im looking into may be an 01.. for 6K? Im sure I can get it lower though..

my main interest in this bike is to have a better experience through some twisties.. as some of you may know, it 800lb crusers vs 400lb sports bikes are two entirely different beasts...

oh??? what are ab muscles...hahaha

I am about 6' 180#, and I have taken some 800 mile days in the past. Could go farther, but I got to my destination. After checking into the hotel, it was back on the bike to go find supper.

It's not in the same league as a Goldwing, but I honestly don't think there's enough time in the day for even a Goldwing to out distance me.

The only thing that I may have on some of these youngsters on here is that I am the ripe old age of 26.

I'd say the Busa is a great "old mans" sport bike. You can cruise (under 7K rpm) with enough torque to satisfy many or probably go ballistic. I haven't hit ballistic yet but this sure is fun so far. I'm 45 with minor aches at 210 & 5'11'' My avatar is an exact image of me.

Welcome to the oRg. As waterbug has stated, its not what you ride, its that you ride. I have the same set up as yourself, 5'11" and 180. The Busa is a great sport/touring bike. It is well suited to many tasks and will make a nice bike for you. If you do decide to purchase a Busa, we have many sponsors and board members that can hook you up for ergonomics. Lower pegs, bar risers, seats, etc. I love my 05 and by all means, this is the best bike I have ever owned. I need to see pics of your current ride, dont know if I have seen that one. Again, welcome to this community.

By the way, if you notice, the average age of rider on this board are my age and higher, I am 36. Does anyone know the average age of the board to date?

faster 0-60 than the busa?? That thing is MASSIVE in motor with 2300ccs but the numbers I found said 3.5 0-60 compared to the 2.5 for the busa...

Are these old numbers?

BUSAJACK.. I thought the name looked familiar.. Im also a member of the R3owners forum.. Really admire the work youve done on your rocket.. by far one of my favorites..
