Running with no air filter?

Could not imagin running with out one in my
Busa. Not haveing a filter in would be like
takeing a shovel full of dirt and putting it
in the throdle bodies and hopeing the motor
would not blow etc.

GSX1360R
did you get a chance to run your bike at the track yet,
you were waiting for leather pants
3 weeks ago. you must have been by
now what times have you run?

I have NO problems letting people know I run without a filter.

If I ever used anything it would be the new stuff I seen at motorheads.

I looked down My air intake tubes and saw bug guts, maybe thats why I couldn't get to 200hp?

When My motors were apart I took a small pocket screw driver and scratched the cylinder walls as hard as I could and with the nickosil you couldn't even see where I had scratched the surface.

Frank, do you really think you gained any serious horsepower by removing your air filter? Do you ride your bike on the street or just at the dragstrip? I guess Im disappointed, I would have never thought you would put all that money and time in your bike and ride it without an air filter.....

Nitro Ninja, a lot of this forum is beginners asking for opinions or advice. I was asked my opinion and I am giving it. Riding on the street without an air filter is not the right thing to do. How bout you? You run with a filter or without? Im not judgmental Frank, people will try to emulate you because they think you have a fast bike. Its just my opinion that I think its better to use a filter. And Nitro, I dont care if you,Frank or anybody else uses a filter or not. I surley will, always. Like all the Formula 1 teams, and all the Nascar teams, and Superbike teams, and Bush teams........ but everone has the right to choose, right?

You better watch giving your opinion Numb Nuts. Heh Heh. All of this air filter stuff is directed at street riders who might not know if it is o.k. or not to run without an air filter. Use all the OPINIONS accordingly and come to your own conclusion people. Numb Nuts, you use a filter? How bout you Busa2? How bout you Rob Muzzy? You were on these boards the other day! How bout you Johnney Cheese? How bout you Motorhead? Lets here it people. And do you take the filter out of your automobiles for more horsepower too?

How about just dropping it??

Your going overboard here WARBIRD.

Who cares what anyone else thinks about air filters!

We all know air filters are there for a reason. (to protect the air going in the motor)

For the record:

There are talks about improving performance by removing the filter screens in your fuel system.(hearsay)
I STILL have all the stock screens in My system. (Thats a shocker since 99's had so much trouble with them)

WARBIRD, sinces your so freaked over this let Me ask you this...

Do you test your fuel before you put it in your bike? or are you putting all your trust in the place you buy it?

You know running the wrong stuff could really cause some problems to your motor.

WARBIRD, I'm a wide open guy. If you want to have fun and make your Busa faster, I've got NOTHING to hide. No secrets.(I take a lot of flaming because of that also)

WARBIRD, Sorry for the sarcasm but you started this thread asking who is running with no air filter and then when people reply that they are not you started ripp'in them up about how thats not the right thing todo.

I have a 12 and I picked up 5hp on a dyno by just taking the filters out. Maybe a K&N would do the same but there not out yet for the 12 so I make do with what I got.

Ride Safe

Heh Heh. Frank, I don't "freak out". Never have my man. I'm one of the calmest people you'll ever meet. I am passionate about trying to help new motorcyclist any way I can though. I think its good for the sport. Nitro, I can admit when I've done something wrong. Your right, I kinda ripped back about this subject. K&N will have your filters soon though and I bet you end up using them. Frank, why don't you be a nice guy and let me know what kind of fuels can hurt my bike? I wouldn't want to do that. No I dont test my fuels,I ride a street bike and as such I am at the mercy of the station I frequent to ensure the fuel is free of contaminents. If you have some info I could use I would like to know. I still think removing packing from baffles and not using an air filter in a STREET BIKE is the wrong thing to do. But your busa isnt exactly a mild mannered street bike is it?

Peace.

I wouldn't have any idea? But you would? You asume a little too much Frank. Of course the choice is yours. That's only right. I think maybe your getting a street bike and race bike a little mixed up. Most of these guys are riding street bikes, putting lots of miles on them in lots of different conditions. Suggesting that it is o.k. to run with no filter is very bad advice. A lot of them look up to you, you should give your opinions accordingly.

WARBIRD

I disagree
Frank is only human, he says what he thinks and if he tells us he runs with no filter, so be it.
I believe him. I have no reason to disbelieve him. But thats his choice, obviously taken from an educated and experienced man's viewpoint.

Anyone with half a brain who does normal, everyday street riding would not ride without some sort of filtration media. If they did, then they can expect trouble.

Strip racing and track racing are different kettles of fish. These motors get checked and rebuilt at a much higher frequency. As you are, no doubt aware. Different horses for different courses.

All of this is just my opinion.
and just my 2cents ;)

I'll have to side with Frank on this one. Just about 98% of the bikes out there running flatslides don't run any type of filter at all and they don't have any problems. I usually ride around 6k miles a year and I've never had a problem with any of my bikes without filters.

Ice Man- I got my leathers last week and went to the dyno messing around but thats about it. I need a kill switch and then I'll be straight... I'll probably go to the track and practice with the bike at a 60" wheelbase so I can get ready for the new 60" class thats being formed.

<<to run with no filter is very bad advice. A lot of them look up to you, you should give your opinions accordingly.>>

WARBIRD, You need to understand that I have never giving anyone advice to run without a filter.
I just speak about what I have done and have I never told anybody they should set thier bike up like mine.

Don't be so judgemental!

I have a different theory on how the air circulates in the airbox with and without a filter or other material.

frank adams, HOW DARE YOU RUN WITHOUT A AIR FILTER ON YOUR OWN BIKE!!!!!!!!!

YOU BETTER PUT THAT AIR FILTER BACK IN BEFORE WARBIRD KICKS YOUR *** !!!!!!

Or maybe everyone should just keep there opinions of what other people do to themselfs.

NN

I dontno--I used to run a gs1100 with flatslides and stacks and the slides were always sticking. I think you should just replace the filter every couple of thousand miles. Whats $40?

<<I guess Im disappointed, I would have never thought you would put all that money and time in your bike and ride it without an air filter.....>>

Can't make everyone happy... But as long as I'm happy.(you know the rest of the story)

You wouldn't have any idea how many people run with out a filter. They're just not as open about it...
