Everyone remember when I posted about a buddy Stew in New York, whose blue/silver 01 w/highmounts got stolen? A plasma cutter was used... I then posted about his difficult hurdles and how a few of us friends helped him get the red 2004 busa, I even posted pics still in the crate......Well... a not so good turn out!.
Two days ago several of them went out for an evening ride in NewYork. Stew always wore a ½ German style helmet. This particular ride someone refused to ride with him unless he put on a full faced helmet... Stew swallowed his 20 + year riding pride and put on the helmet to keep all the riders rydin.
On a bare (not so much traffic) multi lane highway Stew and a couple others pulled out to the front for the higher speed run. Reachin a buck 30 +/- and also approaching the inside of a left curve the group pressed on.
Stew closed throttle to ease into the curve. His friend, an approx three year rider on a custom busa pulled a squid move almost everyone has done at one point and knew they shouldnt have...
The friend was maxed throttle above 185 when he attempted to high speed pass stew in STEW's LANE. Ignored the three or four empty outside lanes, struck stew blindly in the rear exploding stew's busa. Rider #3 on a large CC bike (unknown) with less than one year experience, yet tried to be out front on an unfamiliar rode, ran right into the wreckage running over stew's chest. Stew had on leather coat, gloves and boots. The gloves were too big and peeled off. The coat pretty much melted off and his boots were knocked off. He ended up landing right next to his bon fire of a bike.
Stew fought for his life that night and survived. He has crushed ankles, broken/shattered knees and shins, broken right hand and crushed wrist, crushed ribs and more road rash than there is road kill. He had to have emergency skin graffs to salvage his legs. His right shin boke has nearly been destroyed. Obviously the bike is totalled. The friend that caused the wreck has already been released. His bike slid against the concrete divider approx 900 feet and Im not sure of the damage but totalled. The novice I believe died at the scene after running over Stew, however I can not confirm that part. Hopefully not. If anyone has any other details please add/correct this. I received this from one of the Trooper's on the scene but it's also third hand. I know this crash was not on purpose but the decesion at the time used was tunneled in my opinion.
From all of this, please wear PROPER fitting gear and a helmet. Be cute when your parked. Ride within your limits and remember ANYTHING can go wrong when you least expect it. To cause an accident because of stupidity is bad but to possibly kill a friend while doing it will eat you up alive on the inside.
THIS has changed my idea of riding styles and gear for life!. I met stew over the board thru selling him an HID light. We met in Myrtle last year and became brothers for life.
Please be safe. I will post pics if anyone is interested.
