Scopes

Love the smoke and fire of the powder guns.
There was a range near where my dad was living in his later years and we'd go there with him...apparently there were a few patrons of whom he had a few issues with and if they happened to be there, dad would do a windage check and position himself upwind then shoot his black powder essentially shutting down the other lanes until the smoke cleared....

They tried everything for years to get him kicked out of the club or have to use firing ranges which are down wind.....finally they built a black powder only section of the range (basically just for him)....one particular day the wind was just right to blow the black powder smoke onto the other ranges....and he'd make sure he was there that day just to smoke them out....

Quite a character that old man of mine.....been gone since 2005 now.

I have a vortex, 2 bushnells and a weaver but the best scope would probably be a Nikon. My next rifle will get a Nikon.
Pretty sure Nikon is getting out of rifle scopes. They had an exit strategy 2yrs ago, I was told this by a rep AFTER I bought a decent hunting scope. He promised it would still carry the warranty tho. I do love that scope. Have they produced anything new in the last year?

I purchased my first ar less than a month ago and have been back and fourth on a dot or scope. I originally went in for a 5.56/.223 but the ones they had in stock were out of my price range. I ended up getting a 300 blackout and figured I could get a 5.56 upper later on. I started doing some youtubing and found that some people use a red dot with magnification. I think this is the route I will go since the 300 blk drops alot at the 200 yard mark, a scope may be overkill. I was looking at the vortex spark for the insane battery life and awsome warranty. I stumbled on the holoson and they seem to be very good optics for the price, a true Holo is out of my price range at this point. I have a disgustingly cheap red/green dot atm that works, sort of. I do plan to purchase iron sights soon and practice with that instead of the cheap dot.

My dad (now older brother) had a 1860's cap and ball Colt...we'd shoot it from time to time, it wasn't accurate but sure made you feel like Wyatt Earp.....He had a few old muzzle loaders...one was a .54cal Hawkins and I can't remember what the other ones were-one was a .50cal and the other was a weird caliber (British).

I've shot lots of antique war weapons, everything from an early 1900's Webley pistol to an 1800's muzzle loaded cannon....and almost everything in between...Mausers, Walthers, Springfields, Lee Enfields, BSAs, Dragonovs, AKs, Uzis, various Colts, Tommy guns, Vickers MGs, M-60s, Browning MGs, TOW missiles, RPGs, Carl Gustavs, M-109 SPG (155mm), Leopard and M1 tanks, Bradley's and Stryker 20 mm, 105mm artillery, etc, etc....the list is long and probably boring to many....

Shooting stuff used to be sort of a passion of mine...if I got the chance, I'd shoot anything I could get my hands on....

Now, I could honestly care less if I ever go shooting...I take my guns out from time to time to clean them and put them away again...
So, the obvious question is what's your favorite? As for shooting, I'm putting a lot of time and money into it right now. I want to get to a certain level of proficiency, mainly so if I ever need to use it I can do so responsibly.

I run a sig magnifier with the EOTech. Works great and the Sig just flips out of the way when you don't want to use it. It's only a 3x magnifier, but that works fine out to about 150 yds. Good setup.

What's my favorite? As in scopes or weapon platforms?

If there is anywhere near you which offers CQB training or jungle lane style shooting, that is a great way to hone skills other than sitting on a bench shooting a paper target from a pre-designated distance.

weapon platform. Paper targets are about all there is easy access to around here, so you go with what you got.

Interesting thread.

I have a 1898 Lee Enfield pre WW2 303 rifle in immaculate condition that was kept in the family. Ten round magazine pushes about 2,500f/s. Original open sights.

At 100 yards it still groups better than the average more affordable scoped rifle. Around 1 1/2” at 100 yards open sights.

It's hard to place a favorite on a weapon platform...

I carried several different weapons as a personal platform...each had their own merits...

My list of weapons I have used in anger and on the range:

Side arm: Sig Sauer p226 although I was able to take out steel targets at 100m using our old 9mm Browning High Power
Close in weapon: MP5-latest variant I used was the SD variant
Primary assault weapon-or very own Canadian military issued C8 SFW great weapon...
Medium range weapon-Heckler Koch PSG-1 only shot on ranges-never carried one
Anti materials weapon system-McMillian Tac .50-only shot on ranges, got out to 2000 meters with it.

Of note:

I originally carried an FN C1A1 when I first joined the military and although it was a big heavy pig it would destroy a cinder block wall after a while...and was a real tough platform and could reach out to 600 meters with open sights.

I also carried a Sterling sub machine gun which was fun to cut the target support off at the range but was only effective to 75 meters or so.

I've watched some videos comparing the two and some say a holo reticule is not as crisp as a reflex. I don't think it would be an issue for me if one is "fuzzy". I seen a eotech setup with halo and magnifier and the price was over 1k! I do feel it's the best of both worlds having the magnifier, with my less than spectacular eyes I could use some help. I also remember something about the parallax being better on a holo? Or is that an eotech thing?

Standard issue for us when I did my military service was an equivalent to the FN FAL with the 7.62 X 51 standard NATO cartridge. It was called an R1, but really just a designation to produce the FN locally under licence.

Ours was similar to an FAL only we had an open breach as opposed to the closed on on the other FN variants...Canada wanted an open breach cover so we could top load clips..

Ours was a C!A1 (Canada 1 Alterations 1)
