Breed? Size? Age? General Health? Time with Family? Were you under the influence by any chance?

There is a language that we as responsible Dog keepers should all know. Do you speak it?
Yeah I'm curious too.

Breeding has alot to do with it as well. Dogs inbred CAN have retards too.

That's why I like to make sure I get mine from reputable breeders
not idiots who let anything mate and produce.

He's a Bull Mastif mix, he about 85 lbs. He has biten before, we went thru months of training. We've had him for over a year.
He's very dominate about the house, no one can come to the door, witch i've been tring to break him of!

Dayum John....that sucks..sorry to hear this....I love my dog to death but if he were to bite me or my wife he would be gone. My dog when I was a kid bit me twice....and then he wouldn't even let me in the house...and I never did anything to that dog.

Sounds like you need to choke him out until he squeals to establish dominance. A good friend of mine taught me that.. You'll have to do it on a regular basis.

My favorite is to bite him on the ear to get a similar effect quickly.

Or there is always the alternative of castration (ouch)

Sorry for your pain. If it is a young dog consider giving it to the pound. Or has this happened before?

Wow !!!  Sad story to say the least.  I have a 4 year old male great dane and a 6 month old male great dane. Yesterday I brought my neighbors 7 month old female Mastiff over to play with my pup. They are best friends and have a ball together. Was hot so I soaked them down with a hose and they loved it. Might have to go get her again today as it is going to be very hot. She is a very gentle, shy, submissive dog and shows no agression. Hope she stays that way. I may have a picture or two. I fostered a 1.75 pound 8 week old Jack Russel(runt of the litter) for two weeks. It was really comical to see her playing with my two danes. Pictures to follow in my next message.

Wow..

Wow, John, how are you doing? (no doubt the dogs future is certainly shorter)

Dang, I warned you about dangling steaks in your teeth just to get a kiss.....

You know what I could care less about all this stuff about keeping dogs if they bite you i do really care about what breed the dog is either. If I had a dog and he bit me sorry that is it he is going down no if's, and's or but's. John you are doing the right thing my friend I know the dog is your friend to and it may hurt but it will save you money in the long run for sure. Heal up quickly

Sorry to hear you got messed up mate, but I have to agree dogs do not attack for no reason, may be worth your while if you plan on ever having another dog to see what may have caused this so you can avoid it in the future. One thing to consider is get a female pup, you have a lot less headache dealing with dominance issues as she will see you as the alpha if you handle her training and punishment.

I have only ever had to put one dog down of mine and I did everything I could before that decision was made, long story short while the dog was still healing from a fight with a raccoon which tore my pups ear up, he snapped at and almost got hold of my 3 year old nephew and the neighbors boys. I was advised by the vet that at his age and current state it would be better to let him go, so I did.

I also have trained a number of dogs in my time and one thing I always recommend to folks that are looking into getting a pup is look up a man by the name of Richar A. Wolters, he wrote Water Dog, Gun Dog, Game Dog, and Family Dog it is by far the easiest to follow training with the quickest results I have ever seen, and a number of current dog training experts use a variant of his research and practices.

All that aside I hope you heal up and have no lasting issues from this.

Been there and been bitten before by my own dog. It's not fun. I didn't get rid of the dog when he bit me, but when I think back I should have. That little monster bit my brother in the face a few weeks after he bit me.

As for the reason in the biting; the dog simply did not want anyone messing with food of any kind. He thought it all belonged to him. I tried to break that habit, but I never could. I finally put him down. The dog was agressive.

I'm sorry to hear that happened...good friend/vet has a female bull mastiff that came from an abused home, and she's a sweetheart. Our Dane loves her, she's very submissive, but not aggressive toward anyone...I just hate to hear that you were bitten and that he's being put down

It's just a sad situation...I hope you heal fast John
