So what is with Wal-mart

I've been applying to wally world for part time for over a year and a half and
can't get anywhere. Now I know the economy blah blah but as I walk thru
wally world, let's just say (no offense to any board member who works there)
they have not hired the cream of the crop in many MANY instances.

I see two wally world women with no teeth (or next to none, honest) and :moon:
as wide as volkswagon arguing with each other about what they are NOT going
to do...do you think they could possibly be overworked.

Next I see an ELDERLY man in the automotive department pick up a bug screen
off the floor and try to launch it to the top shelf...doesn't make it...bang
right back on the floor...rinse and repeat at least 4 more times....and I can't
get a big toe in the door.

Just two of many stories...

Here I am in my 40s, active, willing, and capable, been in managment, looking to work nights and weekends
and I get nothing, whilst pathetic people that IMHO would have a hard time getting an interview at
(insert derogatory establishment here) populate the place. Now hats off to wally world for seeming to hiring
the otherwise unemployable but you would think out of hundereds of jobs, a fairly "normal" individual
might just beable to sneak in there. Not to mention there are 3 very close with a 4th being built.

It's just frustrating...:banghead:

Now again your wal-marts may be quite different than mine...I should take a camera
in...it's unbelievable...

What am I missing...???

its what your not missing..........your teeth, hygiene etc

i work part time at lowes unloading the trailer at night, and its amazing at the IDIOTS that they have hired and refuse to fire its unbelievable(this does not apply to me)

Just,

I think what you are missing is that they know you won't be happy there. I would be willing to bet you have made much more than wal mart pays and they know you wouldn't stay.

They are most likely right. It might be ok for a month or so, then you would be saying " what the hell am I doing this for ".

If you don't mind me asking, why wal mart?

And how do they know that exactly...One look at my work history would show
that other than my summer jobs in high school, my minimum time at a job is
3 1/2 years. My current job I've been at for 23 1/2 years (total).

What am I doing it for...I've had my pay cut 3 times...I am now in the negative
and that's if we work every week...one down week and I decide if I wash out
on the credit cards, the car loan or the mortage. I get my foot in the door I'm staying
don't have a choice. Plus I know, most of it is just getting used to it and sticking
with it.

I just picked wally world cause they have large multiple stores open 24 hours...
I would have a better chance of working around my hours. I have tried others...

I've applied to Lowes several times too to no avail.

Let's just say my company consolidated 3 plants at over 120 people each to
one plant and down to about 30ish...and I'm one of the 30.

I was also asked and flown to California for a possible transfer, the company
was going to bump my pay, and pay for a full move from Florida to Cali...when
at the last minute the guy leaving begged to stay and the division manager
decided to let him (probably cheaper than moving me out there) otherwise
I'd been in Cali, got an all expense paid trip to Southern California outa the deal...
My point is, I've probably got a little more going on than the average bear....
AND I CAN'T GET AN INTERVIEW AT INBREED CENTRAL for moving boxes :banghead:

(Did I just really say that )

i worked at wal-mart when i was trying to go to school, as stupid it may sound, they usually dont hire for those night jobs, most of them are already taken and by people like yourself that work two jobs etc, and there just isnt many people there at night. most of its stocking/receiving, couple managers, few floor people and some customer service/cashier types.

did you do the questionairre? everyone i know that fills that out usually gets at least an interview.

i really dont think anyone can be all that happy there. to much drama. its really ridiculous, and a very high turnover rate.

if i were going to something like that to supplement my income i believe i would rather go to a gas station, or similar before id go back there.

are there any wharehouses around there? our local coke plant has a 24 operating for the floor jobs, and sometimes for the production line. i liked that job way better than my wally world experience. also made about 5.65 at wally world, and 9.05+ overtime at coke

hope it works out for ya, and i know how frustrating it can be in finding a job your needing to get by.

Yeah I did the questionaire all three times...

The coke plant is a good idea, maybe I'll give that a shot.

Over-qualified maybe?

I worked at wally world for a bit, was my first full time job. I remember my first day at a meeting before our shift began(3rd) I looked of a saw a real nasty looking guy, shirt didnt fit, hair was gross, he smelled and all around hygene was lacking. I said to myself " thats only one guy what are the odds ill be workig with him?" Appearantly the were 100% :banghead: I quickly dubbed him "Jim Dirt"

I was bored one day while my parents were shopping at walmart so I filled out one of their applications for ****s and giggles. Afterward I couldn't get those people to stop calling me. I had stores that were 70 miles away trying to hire me! One store even offered me an assistant manager position. Now mind you, I had zero retail experience. I guess I just found it incredibly amusing.

Granted I had a BS in engineering...lol but still! fuggers were persistent!

:rofl::rofl: that sounds cool.

Maybe it's because they think it's easier to mistreat someone who may not know any better than someone who has more quality experience. Just my .02

Justy,

Sorry if I am out of line here, I don't know your situation, finances, etc. but I have often wondered why people even want to work for minimum wage. With the gas prices the way they are now, by the time you drive to work and back, at part time, you will be lucky to break even.

I would take one posters recommendation and go to one of the coke or pepsi places. They pay a lot more than wal mart my friend.

Why not try selling cars ?
You can make anywhere from $30,000 to well over $200,000 a yr ?
You should think about it because since most sales jobs are commission only most dealers will hire anyone . They will give you some training a pen and turn you loose . It will be up to you to sink or swim !
I had guys on my sales team that were lazy and not motivated and made minimum income but I had 'slayers' that were good for over 100k a yr for 8 yrs straight . Up to you how much you want to make !
Think about it ?

I'm looking for something part time (30 hours give or take 10) as in job #2.

I got a semi-buddy working for wally world making 9 somethng an hour.
It's his second job too.

He hit's about 30ish hours a week and gets paid bi-weekly $500 bring home
give or take a bit.

$1000 a month...that would catch me up and actually give me a little disposable
income...forgot what that was like.

Him and another buddy were "supposed" to try to get me in (they offered, I didn't ask)
but again...not dealing with the brightest bulbs in the bin...a month+ later, I'm
still waiting...

I CAN sell. It's all about listening to people and leading them where they already
want to go. I just REALLY don't like it.

I used to part time at gunshop, I know cars are different but selling is selling...
I just can't stand the public per say :banghead: , the stories I could tell
just from selling guns...

Yes selling is selling to a point . I worked as a Rangemaster here in Fl before going into the car biz also . While range was down or I wasn't instructing I worked the counter of a store that had close to 5000 guns in stock at any given point .
As far as selling cars goes it's pretty easy . Key is to listen and not talk too much . The customer will tell you how to close them by saying key things .
All I can say is the first time you close a 'laydown' (somebody who doesn't bargain too much) and make $6-7000 in gross and get paid 20-30% of that you will be happy. Most you sell will be flats or just a simple 100 dollar commision but some will put 1-2000 bucks in your pocket in an hour !
You will be floating on clouds. My first yr in the biz I made $65k more than some of the seasoned vets there. You know why cuz as my mgr at the time said 'I didn't know any better' . My head wasn't full of 'I know how to do it'.
I listened and was as nice as could be and made good money. Send customers cards on their Bdays , call them just to check on em . They will remember that and refer you other customers . When somebody walks in looking and asking for you you already have over a 60% chance of closing them and making good money on them same time .
Go check out your local Toyota , Honda or Lexus dealer .
Think about it .
Part time is also what many are looking for cuz the old timers can't cover the floor all the time . You could fit right in .

My wife is a manager at our local super wal-mart. Been there 13 years. I know how you feel....
