Holding the clutch lever is a problem, it blocks off the port that feeds the system (if it did not, you would never build pressure when applying the clutch or brake for that matter)
Glad you got it... I try to be as "literal" as possible on instruction but a simple thing like that can really throw a wrench in the works
Another reason for the "gravity" method over pumping is aeration of fluid.. some fluids will take on a lot of air and keep it for a long time (foamy fluid) makes life tough.. (dot5 is the worst)
