Speedo problem

What happens whenever the gear position sensor goes south?
Could this be the culprit or is it up in the speedo electrical?

hey Pipe...you dont have a tre in there somewhere do ya ?

This sorta sounds like an intermitant TRE shorting thing...

No almighty bald one. I do not have a tre on the bike.
I am thinking about taking the sprocket cover off and checking the speed sensing nut and to give the cover a good look over and look for any cracks.
there's a couple tricks for the RE/RE of that cover...if you haven't "been there,an' done that"...let us know...

the "Almighty Bald 1"...

hav a trouble free 1...RSD.

take your slave cyl cover off, inspect the front sprocket area. maybe you forgot something??

Been there and done that. Will let you all know after I get it checked out.

Maybe the problem is with the Speedohealer.  I just got a Speedohealer on my bike and the speedometer has been very erratic since it went on.  Sometimes it works great and is accurate (measured against a gps) and sometimes the speedometer doesn't  register at all.  It seems to be worst on cold days when it's in the 40's or 50's.  Does anyone have a Speedohealer that works all the time?
SpeedoHealer works perfectly, all the time. I suspect PF will say the same for his. You either have a def unit or something loose in the wiring.

I agree with Justin. When I had it on the bike it worked flawlessly the entire time. Was dead on accurate with GPS. Check wiring or contact speedohealer for a replacement.

RSD,
A TRE cannot effect the Speedo as it only mods the GPS sensor signal before it goes to the ECU.

I wondered too. Sombody on this board once claimed victory over their speedo issues by removing the tre. They probably just bumped something else and thought that was the cure.

hav a good 1...RSD.

Just got back from the test ride.
Speedo still not worky properly.
Guess I'll eventually get the speed sensor, since it would be cheaper then buying the instrument electronics.
Thanks for everyones help.
If you have anything else to add, feel free to.

Installed the HID kit yesterday and noticed test riding that the speedo will jump up and down everynow and then. It did not do this before installing the HID, so I figured it might be the batt. was low, so I left the tender on it all night. Just got back from a ride and it is still doing it.
What's my problem?
If nothing else seems to work double check Rec/Reg voltage. Speedo "hopping" is a common side effect of voltage reg going south. Do you notice anthing wierd with the light (dimmer/brighter/etc).

This could very well be the problem if the reg was marginal since the HID only requires 35watt vs 55 and now the REG has to pull down the extra current. If the battery was low(not sure if you said it was or just thought it was) there is a BIG BLINKING SIGN pointing to a rec/reg failure.

Also, finally an update.
It was the HID unit making the speedo needle bounce.
Has been taken off and silverstars installed.
Works just as good.

Which HID unit was it? I am planning on installing the McCullough unit I got from the xenonKing group buy next week. Was the location of the ballast box the problem? If so where did you have yours mounted so hopefully I won't have the same problem

Yes unit as the group buy.
Bigger box on the right ram air tube
Smaller screwed with the top screw in the turn signal.
