Good news for those who've heard bad things about the slipperiness of the stock Bridgestone Battlaxes and have been somewhat cautious because of it. I took my Bus to the track (Shannonville Motor Sports Park near Toronto) last week to get my 1999 racing licence. On the stock tires at 72 degree air temperatures and under direct sun, I was able to confidently put knees to pavement for sustained high (80 mph) and low (35 mph) speed corners. Both tires' edges shredded up well and took deep scarring, which indicates that the tires' cornering surfaces are quite soft & sticky. Since taking the tires to the limit on the track, I trust the tires more and am leaning more on the street.
I'm now due, at 2,400 miles, for a new rear. But like many of you I can't get an OE replacement until mid June. Has anyone got any experience with other tires on the bus? I'd like to try a mid-sticky Metzler, but as I understand it, the OE Bridgestone is a 190 that specs out at an actual 198. How does a non-OE 190 work on the Bus? Which brand and how's your traction and wear? Are forced to go to a 200 race tire while we wait?
