A good friend of mine stationed at MCAS Miramar called me on Sat. and told me his bike was stolen. Like most riders, this really rashes my @$$. Just spread the word if you know of anyone buying R1 parts:

07 Yam R1
VIN: JYARN20E57A001287
Miramesa area

It had MS plates, shortened stock exhaust, and was lowered slightly. I've attached a pic.

It's probably hacked into a hundred pieces already...

Out of curiosity, where was it parked, did he have security, etc? The more I know, the better I can prevent these things from happening to me and those that I know.

That sucks though, did he have insurance?

I'm pretty sure he didn't have any type of alarm on there and I'm not sure where it was parked. He does have full coverage though, so replacing the bike shouldn't be a problem. I don't live in southern cal, but if I do end up there, I'm gonna be extra careful. The one who steals my bike will have earned it.

Sorry about your friends loss;now he can get the new R1 with the 90 degree crank throws

When an LA copper, I did research on motorcycle thefts (streetbikes only) and, I know this is obvious BUT the correlation between stolen bikes and the below factors is amazing.
1) bikes chronically parked outside
2) population density of neighborhood crime occured in
3) uncovered bikes
4) bikes without aftermarket locking system and/or alarm (both that much better)
5) desirability of particular models

Three of these issues are clearly within the power of the owner...don't park it where exposed, lock it well and cover it! Incidently, an OLD and OVERSIZED cover is best, low lifes or anyone else simply aren't visually attracted to a raggety(not torn) old image.
I hope my old research helps someone! Raydog

I store my Baby with Caliper lock, on motorcycle stands and keys hidden , if they want it its not going to be easy to get!

Not to burst your bubble...

The garage is the only thing keeping it safe-ish and only because it's out of sight and it's "locked" away from the average person. If they want it, they wont work that hard, unfortunately.

Make sure you remove the emergency cord's "T-handle" on the garage door opener. Otherwise they can use a crowbar to open the center of the top panel of your metal garage door (like a coke can) then pull the emergency cord. The door is already unlocked so they just lift it up.

Once in they just pick it straight up off the stands and place it into a van and drive off. Once they get it somewhere, or even en route for that matter, they can remove the rotor with the caliper lock and anything else they want.

Like I said, the garage is doing the majority of the prevention and even it only adds 2 to 10 minutes (if their sloppy, slow, or loud).
