stretch questions

Hey guys, I have spent a few days looking around and havent got an answer yet, I know if you put a fatter tire on, the bike will ride a little worse, but what if you stretch the bike and keep the stock tire size, will this affect the cornering ?  I am happy with my bike looks but would like to get the tire even with the tail light.

Yes, if you stretch it, it will have an adverse effect on cornering. Think of it like this: what turns better: a miata or a moving truck?

Granted, there are other factors involved, such as weight, power, suspension setup, etc, between those examples, but the key is the wheelbase. A longer wheelbase (which you get when you stretch the bike) keeps the rear wheel further from the front wheel, and the front wheel follows a different path around a corner than the front does. the further it is, the worse the cornering.

Thats the NON-engineering explanation. If you want more, PM me.

Thats a good explination, I just wasent sure if it was the tire or the stretch that made the issues. Well i will try it and see how I like it. It wont cost too much for the expiriment and if I dont like it i am sure someone else will.

Thanks for the fast responce.

I'm stretched about 6".  It's not that bad.  Is it different?  YES.  Is it bad?  NO.

The real question is are you cornering your bike at it's limits now?  If not, then you probably don't have much to worry about.

Try searching the site for 'extensions' There will be lots of threads about it.

Where abouts in Ohio are you?

I was forth fastest at a Va group ride one year and that was 6" over and lowered. It's all about the rider and adapting.

No I am way away from the limits on cornering, Only had bike a week so I am still babying it. I am in nw ohio, Findlay to be exact.

If you enjoy riding and hitting the curves don't stretch it. I never stretched my turbo for that reason. If you like to show and do straights and really like the look athen do it.

As for curves I still have a thin chicken stripe !!! I really just enjoy riding and crusing, I bought the bikes more for the looks than the speed, I quess it will just be my decision in the end but the feedback is nice ! Thanx

My chicken strips are a 1/2" or less so twisties don't bother me too much. I do prefer straights though and like the long low look more than twisties.

Hmm southern ohio must refer to the chicken stripe opposite from us northern folks !!!! Funny.

Chicken strips, as I define them are the un-worn edges of the tire from not gettin' your lean on. LOL

Simple

, the shorter the wheel base, the quicker the steering. The longer the wheel base, the slower the steering. Think of a REAL Chopper, who do you think will steer quicker

? Your Busa (stock) or the 18' chopper. That's a NO BRAINER, but you get the point !

Both any change to the bikes suspension will affect the handling.

To improve handling adjust the suspension for you. If you weigh 250 up then you will exceed the front forks, but tuning it the best you can would be better than the factory set up. To provide better clearance for extreme cornering rise the arse 1" and go with the 190/55 rear tyre. Tire pressures can be played with as well to add to cornering performance based on the road and tire temp.

I'm sure I left something out. Stretching the bike is done to help folks with the first 60' at the strip or the quarter mile if you're pushing that much torque and horse power. I digress

6" over was horrible cornering in the twisties. If you live in Phoenix and its pretty flat, you will be fine, but here in CO, we have mountains every where and there is NO way I could even come close to taking corners at the speed I once did with 6" over.

If you go 2-3" over, the handling is still really good...
