the SV is a great bike for a vet and sometimes a beginner in the right circumstances. they are light, nimble and a blast to work on.

heres my streetfighter SV that i sold.

I know we're talking about bikes, but you have a nice lawn!

ha, thats my parents house. my dad is crazy and cuts the grass like twice a day... ok maybe not that much but hes lawn crazy. i will be sure to tell him!

My son has one. Good bike. Smooth, easy to ride. Handles well, brakes have good feel. Power is smooth and controllable.

Good bike to start with. If he likes riding he can always upgrade to a 'Busa later!

Great starter bike as most have said... lots of torque and should be loads of fun for a newbie!!

Have him get the 1000, it will last him longer through the learning curve and I dont think it costs that much more. As much as he weighs, he will thank me in the long run. The power is manageable but there when you need it.
