Hi Gang,
Okay, let me set a few things in place here. 3/24/10
I have been on two since before I care to tell. There have been many times when I could have been in an accident for one or a number of reasons, things that just happen, and you are glad you lived to ride another day.
But sometimes there are those rare occasions when you just know someone above has used his hand to save your sorry butt from meeting him just yet.
I can remember Three of these vividly!
But today was the closest call and most frighteningly one of all.
Short story long, I had just gotten on the freeway and was in the far right hand lane looking for a space to merge into traffic and getting up to hwy speed. At about 60 mph I spotted a nice sized gap between cars and was getting ready to get into it, it was about 60' in front of me, then I saw a puff of blue smoke two lanes over, just about the same place as the gap, I then see a black car skidding out of control, and coming fast toward the gap. He was at a 45° angle to the road and coming across the lanes fast, as his wheels seemed catch he went between the two cars that I was going to merge into and was speeding up. At this point I had very limited options, hit the brakes was not one of them. If I had braked as hard and controlled as I could, I would have T-Bone him. If I had slowed down at all we would have hit. If I had panicked and tried to avoid him to the right I could have been in the loose stuff on the right and very close to the retaining wall.
This is what I did, I ever so slightly changed my line and held the throttle on.
I then braced for impact on my left leg, as I was sure it would be at least clipped and then looked down the road to see what I was going to land on.
As I looked to my left leg and was tucking it in as tightly as I could, I saw his headlight and Honda hood logo only about a foot from my ankle.
I passed and was not hit, and as I looked back I saw that he went all the way over and smashed into the retaining wall.
I know this is a long read, but I just had to get it off my shaking fingers. I got home an hour later and was still shaking more than when I actually went down.
Thanks for the ear, It took me a day to post this as I am still a little shocked.
Glad to be here, and just want to tell you to please be on the lookout for the unexpected.
Bubba
