tire plug

The back tire on my Busa is plugged right now . I'm not running out and spending $140.00 everytime I get a nail or a screw.
Its been plugged for about 2 months and I've never lost pressure . At first I was concerned like you I haven't had any problems at all.

$150.00 vs your life and anyone that might be riding with you, this is not rocket science!!! Get the new tire!

I have plugged multiple tires an rode them just like I do normally.  Fast, slow, twisties, it really doesn't matter.   I am of the opinion that they hold up just fine.  I always used the 3 dollar wal mart kit even.

Everyone is scared of the plugs, but who has ever heard of a plug coming out?
In ten years of motorcycling, on several boards, I never have.

A go between is to get the motorcycle shop to put a professional patch on the tire.  They hold up really, really great I hear, but then you are paying someone to break down your tire and patch it so it will cost way more than a plug.

Yeah Im a cheep sucka.

Maybe I am just lucky or stupid or both.

  I am going with both!

I've had a plug blow out of a car tire and it wasn't a three dollar Walmart kit. It was done by a tire shop.

Had a few that didn't blow out, but developed leaks. That's why I'd never trust them on a bike. I've never had a patch to fail. Not saying they can't, just saying I've never seen it happen.
Sounds like the tire shop didn't know what they were doing when they plugged the tire; or the hole was too bid er sumthin. If you put the plug in too far or not far enough, it isn't going to hold pressure well. Also you have to do a sanity check. If the hole is too big, or is in a strange shape (like a gash rather than a nail hole) then DO NOT use a plug. Those things are only made for small nail holes basically.

I have never paid anyone to plug a tire, just did it myself. I remember once, a plug was leaking slowly, I would notice a drop in pressure of say 5 lbs over a week. I simply grabbed some pliers, yanked the plug out and put another one in. Problem solved.

My mechanic won't plug my tires. He'll put a patch on the inside though. Sounds like a few people have had good luck with plugs and that's fine, but not for me. The tire heats up and cools differently than a car tire, and has greater stresses on the plug.

Went riding Saturday. Stopped by 3 different shops and none of them would even plug a tire. They would all patch but no plugs.
Hummmmmmmmm! Geeze I don't know.

Personally, I wouldn't want to ride around on a tire with a plug. Get a new one.

yip see if you can get a new tyre from the seller if not use a sticky rod type plug an give it heaps it wont let you down:beerchug:

If it's a rear tire and a minor hole, plug it. I've plugged my busa rears for years with no problems and that's with drag racing and all. Buying a new tire is stupid when yours is new.

I tell you what, if you buy a new tire I will take the one with the nail. I'll pay shipping.

+1000

I would borrow money if I have to just to be on the safe side. I don't gamble when it comes to tires.

Take the nail out ASAP!!!

You might even get lucky and find that the nail has not yet punctured the air space. If it does not leak after you pull the nail out, you need not do anything.

I noticed a nail in my truck tire last summer...drove it to a tire store, had the guy jack up the truck, take the wheel off, but when he pulled out the nail, there was no leak. Guy didn't even charge me (but i tossed him a $5 for his trouble).

Its best to remove the nail and plug a tire plug first before proceeding to change a brand new fresh tyre.tried the rear before only.At high speed its totally way out,not advisable at all.The decision is yours.

Like bullettrain said; "get the tire patched from the inside". Go to a good bike shop and have it done right. They will use an umbrella plug. Do it yourself plug kits are great for emergencies but not long term.
+1... Here to my country we never change tires because of a nail !! We just repair it from the inside.Sometimes with an umbrella type or a simple patch plus heat.We never leave a road use string type patch more than a day or two.THEY DO NOT LAST more than ten heat cycles.Never had or hear complains with such a repair.:beerchug:

Plugs are temporary solutions till you can get the tire patched, if possible, or replaced. A small nail in the center of the tire would be patchable, anything more would be a replacement.
