to lube or not to lube

I change my own oil... And, I was wondering about lubrication. I know the lube points and all. But, can anyone tell me:

1. Is it standard grease that I get from Pep Boys?
2. Will any grease gun work?
3. Should I be doing something special?
4. Any other tips or advice?

I figure if I do the lubing, I can eliminate all minor maintenence calls to the cycle dealer.
