Too good to be true...

Got Bessie used; she was a 2001, 700 miles on her. Bought her from the original owner who had scared the crap outta himself in Japanese traffic - I've put 15K on her since

If I were looking for a used bike, I would look here first, then if a bike wasn't here, but a dot ORG member was close, I would ask them to go and check it out. Lots of people on the board to trust!

If I were buying a used bike, I'd rather have them sell it to me the way they keep it, 'cause that's the truth. But if you want pristine, you gotta buy new. To me, worth the extra $.

i looked at buying a used busa but decided not to take the risk, if you have no previous knowledge of owner, you can only go on preception. Whever you buy used you are buying not new goods i.e. taking a chance

just my .02 cents

I bought my 04 with 5 miles on it about a month ago now. The guy had it sitting in a trailer in a recovery yard. I knew the guy because I work with his brother. He has taken all the plastics off to have them painted but lost intrest after Hurricane Katrina. I bought it put a new battery in it and have been happy as pie since the first time I strted it. I never ride my bike hard never had it near redline and probably never will but I am going to sell it soon and I will put it here first.
I think I got a good deal atleast I hope I did.

will you take $3000 for it??

Man, I went through the same thing when I set out to buy a Busa.

Found that most of the good used ones were only around $3K less than a well negotiated new one.

Bought a new '06 for $10.8K, bought it just before Xmas '05, it has 1400 miles on it now, no regrets!

Agreed that buying anything used involves risk. The idea is to minumize that risk by knowing what to look for and asking the right questions to the current owner.
The Busa makes vehicle number 24 for me and all but one were used. Take a wild guess on which one I had the most problems with....yes, the brand new Ford truck. The first six months of ownership and the stealership (I like that name) had it more than I did. Wound up selling it before it was one year old. Not to say that they are all bad just like not all used vehicles are bad but you have to be careful.
Once I narrowed my sights on the Busa (excellent choice btw) I spent close to 5 months looking into bikes before I found my baby.
I got so fed up with scams (100Cycles.com) I sat out briefly before realizing I had to change my expectations. The old rules still apply, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Much better luck was had on cycletrader.com but even then it took a couple of months of constant looking and emailing and phone calls and even at that I had several bikes that were good deals slip through my hands because I simply could not get there in time.
I was very fortunate that the gentleman I purchased my bike from was one of integrity, he held the bike for me since we agreed on a price even when someone offered him more money, or I would have lost this one too. Bottom line is that there are good used bikes for sale, you just have to be patient and be ready to strike when the time comes.
New is nice but it comes with a price....(I'm a poet and did't know it)
