Undercut or replace gear?

OK, so I will be pulling the motor and cracking the cases because the last week of the season, I felt 2nd "jump" about 3 times under hard acceleration. I know the gear can be undercut. A buddy that is helping me (and very knowledgeable about busa's) is suggesting that I just replace the 2nd gear with a new one. I reasoning is this. The bike in an 05 and has 30K miles on it and the problem just showed up. Will I have bike another 30K? I dont know, most likely not. I'm sure most of the damage occured in the first year and a half that I had it. I ride much easier now than I ever did before. Adding a new gear instead of undercuting will be much cheaper and no waiting on a shop to get it done. Whats everyones feelings here (I trust my brothers and sisters words)? The budget is a big concern, I would like to go the cheaper route if I would work for me, but my mind is not made up. Any opinions or experiences I should know about? Thanks in advance.

I've been thinking about this same thing. If you don't plan to slam 1-2 shifts except rarely, it seems the stock set up should be fine. The history of your bike supports that. I like to wrap it out every now and then so I'm either going undercut or '09

It might depend on the condition of the original gear when you get it out.
It may be damaged and then you would have to buy a new gear to have undercut (do both), or at best weld it and then undercut.
I don't like the welding idea as any weld may be more subject to breakage later on.
It will depend when you crack it open.
IMO

I guess it will depend on what I find once I get in there.

Replace it with a new gear. I'm not sure undercutting would fix your problem. Your knowledgeable friend should be a big help in this decision. Good Luck

It's not like you're missing a bunch of great riding. If you're going to all this trouble, make it the best it can be. When it's done you'll never have to worry again about hittng a questionable shift and wondering if you did more damage.
