Everytime I look for gear I get overhwlmed by the choices and give up.

What is a good suit for mostly street riding? I prefer leathers since they work the best and would need boots as well. For the suit I was looking to spend $500, is that just a pipe dream?

Thanks

When you start buying gear you will end up with more than one set. Simple reason is riding in different temps/seasons. Leather will provide the best protection, the downside is the weight. Textile is very good, lacks the abrasion resistance of leather.
I prefer perforated leather and add a liner if the temp drops.
Look at Alpinestars, Fieldsheer, Joe Rocket, all are good and there are many others out there.
You will get suggestions about which is best from everyone using their favorite brand.
Bottom line...... any gear trumps no gear.... skin ain't cheap and it hurts when it grinds off onto the pavement.
$500 is going to limit your choices. Not sure you can do gloves, jacket, pants and boots.

I got Technics 2 piece for right around $400.. I scored boots for under $100 (retail at $300) on Ebay..

I also have a set of "warm" gear for those chilly nights..

I wish I had a one piece suit for the track but I do more street riding and the 2 piece is a lot more practical is all..

so where do you ride, how do you ride? Obviously leather is the preference but on your budget its going to be tough to get it all. If you live in the city, do you get out and stretch the bike's legs or mostly under 80-90mph?

Most folks here ride with a mix of gear, but as said some is better than none. If you are a city rider or someone that doesnt get over 80-90mph, textile/mesh is a good choice when leathers are out of touch. You can score deals on ebay but there are also places out there to get good prices on good gear.
Closeouts :: New Enough, LTD
Check out that link. You can find good boots for 100-150 or great ones for 220-250. That could be 1/2 your budget. You can subscribe to their emails, you'll find out about deals when they come out. Here's a link to the most recent Closeouts > All Types > Power Trip US Army Branded Gear :: New Enough, LTD Army branded but 100-150 range. They have others in the same range and leather jackets in the 150-250 range. Pants are in the same price range and gloves can be found cheap.

So 100-150 boots, 150 pants, 150-250 jacket and just say 50 for gloves = 450-600 range you can have a nice set of gear that will work quite well.

Oh yeah new enough has a great return policy if you get something that doesnt fit just right...lots of members here have purchased from them and will recommend them

oh yeah, fwiw, we usually take a group into the city each january for the bike show, they have everything on display to play with :beerchug:

New Enough is great... get on the mailing list.. sort of like waving a crack pipe in front of an addict....

Joe Rocket Alter Ego. Not what you were looking for but it has served me well and is very versatile.....

You will probably find it helpful to find some local shops like Cycle Gear where you can go in and try on some gear to get a feel for what is comfortable and what size fits you properly, sizes tend to vary slightly from one brand to another or even from one model to another in the same brand.

Watch the New Enough closeouts. I've sent back tons of gear to them that didn't fit for the 110% credit. 3 boots, 3 jackets, 4 pants. Got a pair of gloves Sat. that are going back.

Im using AStars two piece, vented leathers with no race hump on the jacket. Very comfy. I probably overpaid.. but nothing like trying them on in the store and wearing them home. I got the jacket for $385 with tax (MSRP $499) and bought the pants about a year later for $410 with tax (MSRP $499). Probably a better deal out there but I have a good bit of friendship and loyalty with my local dealer and I love throwing them some business. They take really good care of me on everything.

Perforated suit If they have your size left it is a great deal.

Perforated leathers are you most flexible option for riding. If you get cold or it starts raining, just put on some rain gear over the leathers. It will keep you dry and block out the wind. The air space created by the perforations and the sir trapped in the rain gear will give you an insulated layer to help keep you warm. When I rode to Colorado I wore a Komodo 1-piece leather suit. I took Tour Master rain gear with me as well. I use the rain gear many times on that trip. I experienced temps from 30f to over 105f and I stayed comfortable enough to enjoy the trip.

Good example of why it's always a good idea to go to your local shop to try on some gear before you buy it to make sure it fits. When I got my helmet I went to cycle gear and tried on a bunch of stuff to see what fit right and all that, then I came home and ordered one online for a better price. Jacket and pant sizes tend to vary quite a bit between brands and as someone else mentioned, even between models, so save yourself some frustration and try em on first.

honestly the best suit for street riding, thats why all the mgazine riders wear them

+1

You really want to try something on, especially if going with a two piece~!~

I like two piece leathers better because of the fact you can take your jacket off, however...the pants always seem to be large enough to fit me and my wife both in them...HHmmmm

Anyway, I no longer order leathers for that reason. I just got a one piece this past weekend because it was in stock, I could try it on, and it seemed to fit better. The same suit (Apinestars RC1 or Charger) was huge in the two piece. Jacket fit great but pants were 5 inches to large~!~

I swear, I'm not a deformed person (that I know of)~!~

If you are on a tight budget I would recommend going around to shops to try stuff on for size and then shopping ebay for deals on lightly used stuff or just closeouts. I am partial to Joe Rocket for my one piece, boots and gloves and I also have an Icon Daytona jacket for when I am just wearing jeans and have a destination at the end of my ride. Go with quality as it will last you a long long time and pay for itself in the long run.
