Digital is the way to go IMHO. It gives you an exact reading that doesn't depend on the angle or accuracy of the eye

I would think you could go straight across the battery, and make sure you consider wet weather and temperatures when trying to decide what you want.

Mine has held up fine for years now. Got it from Summit. You can find volt meters that are for boats, but they are usually more pricey.

Yes - to a ground and + to a switched source or hot all the time either will work, mine is hot all the time with a switch so I can turn it off if needed..
