We pulled in to Cape Canaveral in the early 90s on USS Grayling (SSN 646). The skipper made some phone calls and made arrangements for them to come and pick us up in buses. We got as close as you can get w/o being a NASA employee to watch that launch. That was over 10 years ago and I still remember feeling very insignificant when that thing launched.
While working in Orlando last week, we went on the roof of the building to watch the launch but it was scrubbed for the day.
Like Rev said the night launches are really neat, you can see them from way over here. I was over on the East Coast riding one day with my camera mounted and saw this while riding down us 1. video
I thought it was cool.
