Seems to me like there's quite a bunch of new folk here...so they may not know the story.

I ain't tryin to come off as some kinda gear nazi or anything...please take the post for what it is and what it's worth to you. All I'm gonna say is that gear def. would have prevented something like this from happening.

Since spring is just about here, please take the time to read up on what happened to me. It's been awhile since most of you have ridden, so don't forget to take it slow and take your time gettin back into the groove.

And please...don't forget the gear. We've had one suffer already...don't follow in his footsteps. If you chose not to use gear, well hey...that's up to you. I just don't want somethin like this to happen to you.

So yeah...here ya go. Please take the time to read through the post. I think it's about 4 pages long, but please take the time to read it. Hopefully it'll save you some hurt and $$$.

And yeah...that's me. Be warned though...there's some graphic pics.

Stay safe.

damn that sux man...glad you made it thru with only scratches

i have everything but leather pants. looks like i need to get some soon. i dont have much of an ass as it is
biggrin.gif
did you ever take pics of the bike afterwards?

just scratches? I suppose so. Nothin broken, so that's a good thing. But I think the rash qual'd as a little more than "scratches". That shid hurt! Big time...

I took pics of the bike after the wreck. Don't have 'em on this box, though. Looks like I'll hafta pull 'em outta the box at home.

Prolly see if I can post 'em up tomorrow.

1+ I agree totally. Take your time and ease back into the flow. No pressure to go balls to the wall right away.

The whole point of motorcycling is being able to enjoy it THE NEXT DAY also. Gear is essential.

Also everyone don't forget to do your "pre-flight inspections". Just takes a second or two to check those tire pressures and the important nuts and bolts.

Remember, "The life you save may be your own".

Wow Pac. A long way to go to show pics of your butt...

, actually, thanks for posting such a vivid reminder - it definately brings you back to reality!

If you live up North look out for the sand on the road. We had a few late snowstorms and all that is remaining is the sand that they used. I had someone pull out in front of me yesterday, hit the brakes and instantly went into a tail-slide. I was able to get off the brakes and escape to the side but scared the crap out of me.

Good advice especially in the Spring... Every year someone gets hurt from the road or just not up to riding expertise after a off season.

Thanks for the important reminder! It's always less painful to learn from the mistakes of others. Though, unfortunately, we tend the learn better from our own mistakes.

Damn Pac, thanks for the graphic reminder. I always wear my Leather but the reminder to take it easy and get into the rhythm can be a life saver. Cold Tires, Cold Road, Sand on streets, Stiff suspension are all a recipe for disaster. Ride Safe.

I have everything but the leather pants which are on the way....
Another thing to consider is the cagers are also more "active" and "unattentive" as to what they are doing this time of year.

Good post Pac , its a very important topic.

No $hit man, ive seen and had road rash myself and yours is up there for being severe.

Now that ive had both broken bones and road rash I gotta say both suck. The road rash can be avoided with gear so might as well do it.

Glad that you guys were able to make something of this.

Hoepfully this will save someone some rash and hurt this spring....

Remember: don't dress for the ride. Dress for the crash.

I wound up with a 7 inch plate and 6 screws in my ankle..... all because I decided to wear riding "shoes" instead of boots.

it only took 3 days for me to end up with 14K in hospital bills.

7 years later I had ALL my gear...about 900.00 worth, more than 2 months before I owned my busa....

my wife commented that I pretty much commited myself to getting a bike, since I already had so much invested in gear.

dress for the crash, never the ride!

Well I can totally relate to this. When I started riding I had that squid mentality thinking I was a good enough rider that I wasn't gonna wreck. Well my first Busa was totaled compliments of a semi not seeing me and hitting his jack brake and jackknifing right over into me because he didn't see me. Soooo I ended up dropping off the shoulder of the highway at 80mph in shorts and a tee shirt. I did have a helmet on and it saved my life. BUT since I had no gear on I had a baseball sized hole just below my left knee where one of the reflectors on the side of the highway gouged a chunk of meat muscle and everything out of my leg, rash from my shoulders down to my wrists on both arms, my hands had no palm skin, no fingertips, rash on the front of both of my calfs and the back of them, and bruised everywhere that there wasn't rash. I was one of those people that had to learn the hard way. 7 days in the hospital burn unit and 2 weeks of home nursing. It really took about a year for my knee to heal up from that hole to. I am just lucky that I only have a few nasty scars to show for it though most people don't get that lucky. Not too mention racking up a 40,000$ hospital bill (thank god I had insurance). So to make it short listen to Pac. If you think the wreck hurts wait till they have to clean the rash up if you wanna know real pain. Ride safe.

My god! Thanks for the info! The pics really hit home!

Thanks again and lets all have a safe season!

God bless

I know how that feels...had same kind damage back in 80's wearing a shorts and flip flops...BTW, what kind people call that a scratch? he must be a terminator or road rash is his middle name or what? can't believe I heard that...
sad.gif

I still see some people not wearing a road gears in summer time...it is hot like in the microwave oven in summer but its worth it...

well, let's not sweat the small stuff...the important thing is that hopefully this reminder will serve to keep us a little more aware of our own fragility.

I'm not tryin to say that anyone who doesn't wear gear is an idiot...all I'm sayin is be careful.

Wouldn't want anythin to happen to any of you.
