Ok, Im not talking about GoPro or any camara to attach to the bike. Im talking Site seeing Camaras. Im looking at buying a new camara before going on a vacation to Ireland. Im prepared to spend some cash but dont want to fork out thousands of $$ for something that I could have spent hundreds for and gotten similar quality.

Any Experienced Photographers here or amatuers that know there stuff? Im even thinking abotu taking a Photo class at the local community college.

What are your thoughts??

Well id say get maybe a cannon rebel but spend the money on a good lens. The lens is the whole camera. You may spend more for the lens than you did the camera but it will be worth it once you see the pics. Then practice practice practice. Learn all the settings and what they do. Dont be affraid to take alot of pics, you can allways weed through the crappy ones. Dont learn how to use the camera on your trip. try to figure it out before you go. Great pictures takes alot of practice and knowing your camera. Good luck to you.Ive used a Canon 30d with a 70x200mm L lens for years and I love the combo.

Nikon D80. Find one used, craigslist, etc. The joy of the D80 is you can use "older" lenses on it without sacrificing auto focus. If you are just using one to learn on and take really nice pics you could get a d40 or a d60 (I have a d60) but you are limited to using the newer lenses if you want to have autofocus. I agree with war69 that the camera isn't nearly as important as the lens.
You can get a Nikon D40 for around $250 used with an 18-55 lens which will get you off in a great direction for taking better pics!
Don't spend too much on everything right away as you might quickly learn that you should have just bought a point and shoot, and you "hate" taking the big camera everywhere...

You can definatly tell a difference from a good camara/operator and a point and shoot camara. Thats why I wanted to start this thread and get some opinions.

So what you guys are saying is a average/decent camara with an above average lens could produce better pictures in theory then an expensive high end camara with an average lens?

YES! Most definitely... :beerchug:

Yes. Whatever brand of camera you deside spend the money on the lens. Ill show you pics I took with my camera that you will never do with a point and shoot.

The Canon XTI is a great cam or any of the Rebel line. Like stated above the lense is where the money should be spent. I shoot with a 7D now.

Without a doubt yes. The lens makes all the difference in the world.

Ive seen some gorgous stuff in my day and when I take a picture of it it looks like crap... Granite allot of it may be the person taking the pic:whistle: but I still want to have a better chance of taking good pics on this vacation so not using a cellphone or cheap disposable camara unless its an apsolute necessity.

Alot of what comes out is based on the photographer, not the camera. Like others have said above, good lenses will help in a variety of situations, especially being able to zoom. You want to look at the optical zoom number, digital zoom is worthless. You'll also want to look at the camera's ability to resolve in low light. A quality flash will help out alot with the night and indoor stuff. Unless you are planning to make posters, don't sweat the megapixels.

i love posting up pics. and i think i have posted some good ones. i've never had a "camera" so to speak. i have always used my phone, a Nokia twist. it works good for a not so serious picture taker like myself, and besides its always on me. i may loose a camera, but i keep real good track of my phone.

PalV,
Don't get fooled into thinking you need an SLR. Think about having to lug that camera all over ireland and beyond. I would recommend a point-n-shoot Cannon S95. Canon S95
it has a fantastic lens on it. It has all the controllability of a larger DSLR, and it fits in your pocket.

Yeah Ive been looking at prices and im stearing away from most of the SLR models. I dont mind spending allot of money but like i said b4 i dont wanna spend money on a camara that does more then i plan on doing..

Rubb uses a Canon EOS 50D with a 18-200mm walk around lens.Go for image stabilization too. Also have a Sigma wide 10-20mm.

Classes would be awesome,I am still learning my rig,but it takes wicked pics.
