What specifically to check out?

Hi guys, on Wednesday I am going to check out a 99 that is looking good. has 27k miles but never raced or laid down. Mostly commuting miles. I have spent the last couple days and still now poring through all the info there is here. I was wondering if anyone would briefly suggest the things to specifically check for wear, tear, or flaw when I am looking at this bike. It has new brakes new pilot power tires and was serviced by the dealer it sits at. Not sure are warranty if any I doubt it will be much.

So all input here is welcome, potentially getting one is an exciting prospect. Thanks guys, sorry if there is a thread similar to this if there is I can't find it. Tried using the search a few different ways but to no avail.

Where are you located? It's possible that a member is close by that may be able to help you out.

Run through the gears paying special attn to 2nd on get off the throttle hard and make sure it stays in gear. Good luck on the buy, sounds like it may be well taken care of so you should be OK

It would be awesome to own a '99. That said, I would want to know about how well the bike was maintained over it's life. By this point the fluids : radiator, brake, etc. should have been changed a number of times. You certainly need to take it for a good ride and make sure it's in good condition. Check the fork seals, etc. and make sure they don't leak. Check the front fender below the nose for scratches that would indicate wheelies, etc. Is the battery shot or is it new. 27K isn't a lot of miles on one of these bikes if it hasn't been abused and if it's been taken care of.

When I bought my '06 the dealer was showing me a used '05 with less than 2K miles showing. He told me the same thing, never been dropped, never been abused. I quickly pointed to the rear tire that was shot.

Good luck on the purchase.

great remarks above, additional to that check for any leaks around engine area, coolant etc...
check for any smoke from exhuast when crank the bike.
check the frame area make sure nothing has been welded or any cracks.
tranny is going to be the tricky one and clutch too. going through each gear to make sure there are not any issues and no slippage on clutch.

good luck!

i like to look at the small things....

footpegs, shifter and rear brake should be worn.
same with clutch, brake levers...if thes look new, they have been replaced after crash.

same with engine covers....new and shiny is another post crash repair

chain, sprockets should be used as well....nobody spend money on tires, chain, sprocket or brakes just before trading it in.....

if these are brand new, it makes me believe the original owner was not as diligent with the maintenance as they are claiming and the dealer had to make the repairs before they could sell it.

that being said, there is nothing wrong with a previously crashed bike.....however the price should reflect it.

I am in Lancaster, PA......bike is near Reading, PA. Going to check it out tomorrow. I will be sure to check these things over, however the dealer stated brakes and tires have been replaced....so hopefully I will be able to judge by the condition of other things. Thanks.

a lot of good advice here, i would check back frame on a 99 they were made of aluminum and cracked or broke.take front seat off and look by the battery and check the front neck by the tripple tree for cracks also .

I log everything i do to the bike, see if they have done that, look at the chain and sproket you can tell if the bike has been kept up allot of people forget to clean that stuff and it's one of the visible things you can check. look for small leaks, check the oil, look at the radiator fluid, TEST drive it, open the throttle to see if it mis fires(SPARK PLUGS), see if the clutch slips when cracking the throttle. I keep every receipt when i buy something for the bike and i have a three ring binder to log every oil, sparkplug, radiator, chain change, etc. looks good when you can pull something like that out to show.

off that subject, I would love to have a 99, 00 model, those bikes are sweet, 220 guages, unrestricted, very nice bike and hard to come across. good luck hope it works out!!!

brakes and tires being replaced tells me the guy rode it to death....and may have skimped on routine maintenance....

Run 2nd. gear all the way out & make sure it does not (Skip). If it feels like the chain slipped, 2nd gear has a common ($2,000.00) problem.

Are you getting a good deal on her?

Dealership is asking 5800, honestly not sure if that is a good deal or not. It seems okay, but I am not finding many for sale in the area to compare.

While this is good info, it's not 100% accurate. My covers look as new as they did on the show room floor. My chain and sprockets are spotless and show little or no wear.

My bike is also up for sale, and I replaced the tires because the old Michelins were worn.

Some people, such as myself, are perfectionists when it comes to their bikes.

What if the guy replaced a bunch of parts. Then, shortly after decided to trade it in?

You can't always assume the worst in people.

Talk to the owner, listen to him. After 5 minutes you'll know if he's a tool or not.

Anyone have better shopping methods? I basically stumbled upon this one....in the add he said price is firm but I am sure there is some leeway in that....there is always leeway :)

Thanks for all the stuff to look at, I shall see tomorrow.

If you were gonna spend 6000$ on that i would look around for an 07 that a dealer might have sitting still i would think it would only be a 2000$ more.
I got mine in 2004 for 8100$ from a dealer and it only had 2100 miles on it, with headers, pipe and commander.
but i got lucky the guy just came in and traded it on a goldwing

Be sure to check the Busa classifieds here at the .org There are many good deals to be had.
