What would be a good track bike?

I've been thinking of picking up a second bike as a project to build a beater and maybe track bike.  Maybe something wrecked that I can buy a few things at a time for and put back together.  I just really want something that I won't mind dropping.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?  The SV650 is an obvious one.  The main thing is that the initial bike cost needs to be pretty darn low, like less than $1.5K low.  Otherwise I'd probably be looking for a banged up R6 or GSXR600.

I think I want something really small and light that I can put some street legal race tires on and have some fun on the very few twisty roads we have around here.  Anyway, just thought I would ask...

get a bike with a salvage or requilt title there is a guy on my board selling them all teh time he doesnt have any now but ill let you know when he does.

Dude you are living in a dream world if you don't think there are twisties in the dfw area, if you would come out and ride with us some weekend you would see. You will be sore at the end of the day from throwing the busa around. On the other note a good bike would be a ninja250 you can find those all the time for a low price and they are a nice track bike as well cuz there really isn't that much to screw up if it does go down. The leader of our club has one his youngest son rides and he has no problems hanging with us through the corners he just prays we don't get on a straightaway..lol. But seriously I have been thinking about getting one myself for trackdays and such as cresson and tms tracks really aren't big enough for a busa, so if you are planning on trackdays at eeither one of those you won't need anymore than 600cc for sure. The cool thing about the 250 is you can qualify to race on that bike and that sounds like fun to me.

Hey JC,

I know we have some or I wouldn't be looking to build a bike just for that kind of thing. I've been watching the ride posts on fwmcr. I hated to miss the ride last weekend, when you guys headed up this way, but I had commitments for the entire weekend. I was thinking about meeting up with you guys this morning for the ride you posted, but you know what happened there. If you're planning anything for Monday I might be up for it though. If not I'll catch up with you all before too long.

I checked out an r6 a while ago. It felt like a toy. Very, very light. I might get one as a track bike or to bench press on mondays

A Gixxer 600 would be a good choice....plenty of them around and cheap to fix up
