Well I thought I'd give everyone an update on what's going on with this issue. Forgive the length of the post I'm about to update you on almost two days of occurrences with this issue. I'm too tired to spell check it so just wade through it if you can
After the inspector left I asked Kraft Nissan in Tallahassee to confirm their findings that the failure was indeed the transmission cooler. They implied they were there during the inspecting and could confirm the failure was due to an aftermarket cooler which was poorly installed on the truck. I requested Kraft Nissan get me a quote for everything that needed to be done to repair or replace the failed parts. After having their so-called Master Transmission technician look at it they deemed (as I said in my first post) I needed a new transmission because of friction damage to the cylinoids due to complete loss of transmission fluid. I went out spoke with this master technician and he told me the same thing to the face "the thing is a wreck" he says. Their quote a wopping $3,800+ including the transmission and labor.
Now I've said before I don't know anything about transmission but that just seemed high to me. I asked a guy whom is a retired mechanic in the armed services and he recommended I get a second opinion from a company in Tally he trusted. So I payed to have the truck towed to Nationwide Transmission in Tallahassee. The guys at Nationwide Transmission was able to confirm the failure was due to an incorrectly installed cooler. Basically the previous owner of the vehicle installed this aftermarket cooler for some reason and used poor materials (rubber hoses and faulty clamps) to bypass the radiator. However Nationwide indicated there was still fluid in the transmission which was still acting as lubricant. I reminded him Kraft Nissan indicated the fuild was completely gone. He said no, that the fluid was burned up but there was still enough fluid in it to provide lubrication to the cylinoids. They also dropped the pan on the transmission and found no evidence of friction damage anywhere.
So I asked Nationwide to quote me the price for a used transmission (no more than 30,000 miles) and a new transmission. And while he indicated he wouldn't know the extent of the damage until they cracked open the tranny he provided a very reasonable quote. Used for $1,600, and new for just over $2,000. Those are the numbers I was expecting. So I requested he do what needs to diagnose the complete damage.
This is where it gets exciting. About an hour later I get a call back his first words were "This thing is making a lire of me." Of course I asked him what he was referring to and he said the first thing they did was repair the lines/leak put transmission fluid in it and take it for a ride. Of course I asked how he could do that if the cylinoids where froze, and the clutches were burned up. He said
"There isn't anything wrong with this transmission. I just drove it for 10 minutes on the interstate waiting for something to fail, or the clutch to slip and it runs like a champ." He goes on to tell me they double-checked for friction damage, perform the typical service on the transmission and flush the transmission fluid. He tells me
"the total bill with towing and all will be around $170 and that it's ready I can come pick it up." I said are you sure? Kraft Nissan made me believe the transmission suffered a catastrophic failure. He said Kraft Nissan didn't even crack the bottom pan open, they just looked at the transmission fluid, identified the point of failure and assumed the worse without even inspecting the transmission.
So my truck is in the driveway, it ran great on the 40-minute drive home. They did order a larger cooler for me because he said if I ever do decide to pull something of any weight the one installed wouldn't cut it for long. So I'll be taking it back for that installation.
I called the service manager that was helping me at Kraft Nissan back and told him
"Nationwide Transmission inspected my truck, found no internal damage to the transmission, provided a flush and service and charged me $170. How can you justify attempting to charge me $3,800+ for a new transmission?" The phone goes silent for a few moments. To which he replies
"Are you serious"!
The rest of the conversation is what you would expect, about how he's going to speak with this so-called master transmission specialist blah blah blah. I told him to do what he needs to and I'll do what I have to. He asked me what I meant by that. I told him I called the extended warranty company and let them know Kraft Nissan attempted to bill them $3,800 to replace a transmission that had nothing wrong with it. I go on to tell them I just paid $170 which included a $55 towing fee to have it fixed and drove it home. I told the company I just thought they would like to be aware of Kraft Nissan's unfair and deceptive business practices because they attempted to charge you first as the warranty company, and when you said no they attempted to deceive me into thinking the failure was catastrophic.
The warranty company indicated they would look very seriously. Rather they do or not, my truck is fixed and running great! I can highly recommend Nationwide Transmission if your in the Tallahassee area. And if you even think about having your vehicle serviced or (lord forbid) you consider buying a vehicle from Kraft Nissan shoot yourself in the foot. Or better yet just toss $5,000 out the window on your way there, chances are high you're going to loose it anyway dealing with those crooked jerks.
