What's the lifespan of a Spool Bolt ?

Thinking out loud?!

Anyone change the spool bolts for the rear stand regularly/yearly ?
Anyone ever had one bend or worse , snap?

Curious if since the forces applied to the screw are not of a pulling or holding manner but of a lateral shearing effort what if anything happens to them?

There are many grades of steel and bolts. Look on ebay and most state what kind it is. Mine are as heavy duty and highest grade I could find but even with these I don't know enough to know whether or not I'm safe sitting on the bike while it's on the stand or not? Due to weight of bike wanting to rip the bolt in half has anyone had any problems related to leaving the bike up on stands for extended periods or hundreds of ups and downs?

Only wondering this cuz this is the first street bike I've ever had in my life without a center stand. Probably my only real complaint about the bike.

Ill be honest here,, i thought i have heard it all till now!

I have never heard of one breaking from just sitting and such. In a crash yes, but never just doing there job!

The bolts from china are stronger. I think they are called cholts...

You been hitting the bottle again ???

I have never heard of one breaking, bending, or pulling out...other than a crash.

I figured they were pretty strong.
Was just curious if anyone had ever heard of or seen a bolt snapping/bending is all.
Again first time I've ever used stands w/spools and it seems strange to hang weight on a bolt like that is all. I'm sure they have been around a long time but it's my first exp with them.

I have no idea what the lifespan is, but I was pretty nervous about using them at first. I still wonder about it sometimes, but they never even appear to be flexing when I've checked. If they're not flexing, then metal fatigue isn't too much of an issue, right? ???

Ok so the word 'Lifespan' may be outta place.....

We may have to get some of these Cholts as well as comparable Bolts and have GoatKart do some hardness testing for us.

Blanca, don't put high grade hard bolts in your swingarm spools my friend. You want soft bolts like the ones that came with the spools. The spool bolts are soft so they are likely to bend during a crash. If you go to a high grade bolt you are likely to break the spool ear off the swingarm during a getoff. We have one race bike with a missing spool ear and my friend GregBob is missing a spool ear as well due to crashing. I have a bent one on my gixxer from a getoff.

Another little tip,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, use the smallest swingarm spool you can find. I use Vortex spools. The smaller the spool the less likely the ear will break during a crash. You can weld a new spool ear onto the swingarm but you must remove the swingarm to do a proper job.

Hahaha thank goodness I wasn't drinking anything while reading this thread. It would have been all over the monitor.

The shear strength of the M8 bolts used is 8800 pounds. So I dont think it will break by using it while sitting on it.

Blanca, I leave my '06 up on the stand all the time and have also sat on it while on the stand. - It's plenty strong, don't worry.

Also, the Cholts are made of bamboo, so they flex a bit under load...

See here we go again,
Ill say now, that this post will most likely go for 10 pages! LOL And for what,, Humor! :beerchug:

For the "shear" enjoyment of it!

Please forgive me if this makes no sense, I'm posting from my phone :D

How often do you guys change the air in your tires? :poke::rofl:

Why didnt I think of that? That's a great question.
I bet stale air will rot out your tires from the inside prematurely.

GixerHP just for you I hope it goes 11 ! Flame me if you want since your all knowing but it was an honest question.
Better than the bike falling over , me coming here and saying that and then folks like you would come out and say 'oh yeah you should have been watching those bolts, they tend to snap!'

You should be fine Saiid. As stated above... Only time I have seen or heard of spool failure is from an accident where it got hit or damaged. Oh adding to the post count too!:laugh:
