WHO IS RUNNING 200/55zr17 REAR TIRE?

I've been running 190/55ZR17 rear on the 1st gen 'Busa for about 15 years. I just put that size on my 3rd gen, to replace the OEM tire. I ride mostly canyon and mountain roads, and like the more nimble feel that size imparts.

I've ridden the 1st gen on a Roadracing track a few times. Not really it's element, but still a fun time. I preferred the 190/55 size there too.

I haven't had the 3rd gen out on a Roadracing track.
Im confused… I’ve had 190/55/zr17 rear on my gen 3 for a few months now… I only did it so I can get a 75w coz I’m 265lbs and I’m tired of chewing threw tires like it’s nothing and these are the ones that have lasted me the longest… I’m not entirely sure how much of a difference it made as far as handling, but that’s likely just me!‍♂️ should the 55 make it easier or harder to lean at lower speeds? I don’t understand the physics!‍♂️ and why are there so many people saying it’ll basically handle worse with a 200, yet someone posted that they got a 200/55/17 and the bike handles better now… how? I’m so confused… someone please help me!!!

To answer your question it's a matter of geometry.....a 55 series tire lifts the arse of your bike up slightly which places more weight on the front tire which creates more friction on the tire that equates to a quicker turn in when cornering....

I've not heard much about a 200 series tire causing any issues when cornering as many here also run those with little to report.

Remember the key number in a 200/55 tire....the 55 which makes the tire taller.....the width difference between a 190 and 200 will make a little more of a contact patch so may give a little more traction especially when the pavement is hot and tire temperatures are up....a 200 series tire has a lower profile compared to a 190 with a little more crown on the tire.....but this also changed from brand to brand....some brands have more crowns than others which changes the profile of the tire.....

I guess imma have to start riding the other 2 more! What ends up happening with me is the same thing I’ve done with cars! I love them all but end up giving the newer shinier one the most attention! Heck, I’ve only had the Gen 3 for 9 months and I’m at 15k miles already.

That's a bit of riding......good for you......glad to hear you are enjoying the Gen 3....

All of your bikes look stellar.

As for having multiple bikes and not riding them all....been there and got that tee-shirt, I went down to one bike and although I miss the other ones, I'm much happier with having one as there is no conflict within me as to which one I am going to ride.....

Yup! At times it seems kind of pointless, till one needs tires and you can quickly hop on the other!! But that’s also all relative, insurance and maintenance on 3 bikes could buy you a spare parts and tires on demand!! Last Year my Gen 2 decided to abandon me in NY on a journey from Texas, so I was glad to have a spare till I could have it fixed, fly there and ride it back. But aside from those situations. The newest one gets the most love! Last August I took the Gen 3 from Texas to Tampa… about 20hrs one way… loved it! I can report that cruise control is convenient!!

Thanks! I like those long rides, just coz the Harleys guys give me so much grief… I live telling them, I can do all that but way faster!!

Took them a while to figure it out, to this day I’m not 100% coz they swapped so many things!‍♂️ But it seems it may have been the ignition switch… ended up just installing a kill switch!

Don't feel bad. It's both confusing and counterintuitive. The only guarantee is that the more you read this forum the more you'll learn. A year ago I had no idea that drag racing rear tires on cars, those great big ones on the top fuel ones don't provide more grip. But they are good heat sinks. Which makes them faster. I had to wrap my head around more surface area means less pressure on the rubber, which means less grip.

Everything is inverse relationships. Which is another way of saying nothing comes for free. Your setup looks like it would benefit from the Butterball (200/55), and the Butterball sure looks better. My gen 3 gets ridden in the twisties, so I like the comparatively reduced unsprung weight and taller lean angles of the stock size 190/50. If you're on the heavy side and want durability, 190/55 will be the worst as the taller profile means a smaller contact patch on the freeway. So a powerful bike will wear through the center rubber faster every time you accelerate. Another counterintuitive thing is that the wider tire needs to lean more to go through a curve at the same speed. But you'll have a bigger contact patch in the curves, so that will improve grip. But it will be heavier, so that will reduce handling. It's all compromises and overthinking it can drive you nuts.
