Hey Gang,
A while back, Cache mentioned riding with Havoc, Thinker62, and their use of hand signals.

I've never used them (haven't ridden with many other people), and am interested in what the signals are, and how to make them.

Mucho appreciado!

I point to the side of my helmet which means turn on your chatterbox

A tap on the head means cop.

Point at the tank means I need gas.

Other than that I am to busy to worry about anything else.

The ones I've seen and used are:

Point at the gas tank, need gas
Wave hand low on the left, slow down
Point left, turn left
Pat your head, THE MAN up ahead or on the radar detector
Foot off peg to point at the side the gravel, sand etc is on.
Hand low on the left to wave faster bikes by
Oncoming bike gives the thumbs up, no cops ahead for you
Thumbs down, slow down! If he points at you he recognizes the 'Busa, you da man!

For those careless cell phone yakking soccer moms that almost changed lanes right into you:
Look at them and point two fingers at your eyes,  Look! stupid!
Put hand parallel to your mouth and pull away quickly,
Flip the back of your hand quickly from under your chin,
Make a fist, extend your thumb, and your pinky and put it up to your ear like talking on the phone then pretend to hang it up and shake your head.
Put your hand "over your mouth" and blow a kiss to the cute girl in the 'vette

One I would like to know is the sign language for Pretty.

There is a small book (like $4.00) called: "Motorcycle Sign Language" ISBN: 1-56002-072-5 Published by: Patterdale Publications.

It is pretty cool... If you don't like some of the signs, you can alter them.

BTW - my buddies and I use this sign for police. pointer finger aiming up, make 3 quick circles about 6 inches in diameter above your head or shoulder.

Patting your head normally means find refuse or a motel for the night.

Add to list: Curl fingers like around a tube of pepperoni and slide up and down 4 times. The salute to the rider types that don't wave back, after the fact of course.

A new I just came up with: the quick duck/stay down behind shield means crap flying off the vehicles ahead or low flying birds, so watch out.

American Sign Language
Pretty
(beautiful, beauty) The right hand, fingers closed over the thumb, is placed at or just below the lips. It then describes a counterclockwise circle around the face, opening into the '5' position, to indicate the whole face. At the completion of the circling movement the hand comes to rest in its initial position, at or just below the lips.

Bed
The head is tilted to one side, with the cheek resting in the palm, to represent the head on a pillow. Both index fingers, pointing down, move straight down a short distance, in unison (the two front legs of the bed), and then are brought up slightly, and move down again a bit closer to the body (the rear legs).

Sandwich
The fingers of the upturned right hand are tucked between the middle and third fingers of the left hand, whose palm faces the signer. The motion may be repeated.

Kiss
With fingers touching their thumbs, both hands are brought together. They tremble slightly, indicating the degree of intensity of the kiss.

Knob
The signer pretends to grasp and turn a door knob.

Phone Number [duh]
Finger the numbers she uses to track you down and turn you into the police for sexual harassment on a public highway.

Maybe I should use signals when i ride with my friend(s). Usually tho the symbol for a cop is when someone slams on their brakes.

For us, we blink our brake light numerous times for cops, or right hand down low, palm fully open.
we also use signals when making side to side lane changes
left arm out for left and right out for right.
point at the tank means time for fuel.
point at your mouth means time for food.
point at your ear means somethings making a noise on your bike.

Hey monster me and my friends use some of the same ones a low patting hand and flashing break light means slow down cop or problem ahead. We also when going through sharp coners that we all may not know well use our turn signals left and right for left or right sharp corner just to give alittle notice to those riding behind you that you will be slowing and there is a shrp corner coming. especially at night. Other than that the usual point to your butt and hold your nose means you already have gas LOL.

Pepperoni, on salami?

Thanks for the "Pretty" Dubya.

most of the guys I ride with are to carefree to notice a signal...The only one I've gotten them to buy into is patting the helmet to signal the police are <span style='color:red'></span>"RIGHT HERE!!!"

Oh yeah and the middle finger both hands at the same time...For people and riders that I don't like...They get the signal...

The guys I ride with........Laughin already cuase Gregg will shake his head at me....

If a rider slows all the way to the back = everyone move over a lane cause reckless op is about to do a standup, a tank surf, or someother life threating manuver

A foot out to the side is indicating a lane change or turn; signals just dont matter.

pat the top of the head for the po po. (Watch it Gregg...) This is because everyone is usually reachin to pull their eye protection down.

Lift up of shirt towards a car is hoping for a return favor.

Turn around and pat the back seat is offerin her a ride.

If you hear one rev up, look out cause everyone is wheeling behind him.

When your sittin on the berm with "THE MAN" your nextel doesnt quit ringing cause everyone is looking at you from the next exit/overpass.

I use 'em...seems to get peoples' attention over just using signals...

I failed to use 'em yesterday while making a right hand turn simply because I was thinking about some things, probably shouldn't have been riding anyway...I nearly got hit by the old man in a Taurus station wagon.  I saw him coming, and not slowing down and readied myself to give the throttle a twist when he suddenly hit his brakes and the front end of his car took a dive downward just yards away from me...I keep thinking that was my fault 'cause I always use the hand signals, but didn't that time...

My wife is an American Sign Language interpreter but somehow, I don't think it would help much here.

Still, if you wanna know, I'll be happy to ask....

Ugh! I like to ride my motorcycle because of the free feeling I get. The last thing I want to do is ride with a pack and have to be aware of signals. When I had my Harley I got behind two Harley guys who couldn't keep their hands on the grips for more than two seconds. They had signals for everything but roadside Siamese twin breech births: left leg out for crack in the asphalt, right leg out for crack in the ass . Left arm down for dead squirrel lying face down. Right arm up for dead squirrel lying belly up. It nearly drove me crazy. And so unnecessary.

I thought it was left arm down for belly-up squirrel......?

Incidentally, if someone has their hands on their helmet with both index fingers pointing straight up, it means they just got an anal probe from a UFO.....
