Will not shift into first with clutch lever all the way in!

Hi all, i need your help. I have seached all relative keywords but could not find my question answered so i am sorry if it is one that was answered before.

My 2009 started this right away with 0 miles leaving the dealership. Right from a start most of the time it will not click into first without me feathering out the clutch and then pulling it back in. Even at a very slow roll it happens. Sometimes I get lucky but most of the time it just goes into neutral. I read the post about there possibly being a safety mechanism so you cannot downshift at a fast speed but this is not it. It sometimes will not go in when I leave my garage shifting into first for the very first time. The bike shifts perfectly up and down in every other gear. It never clunks into any gear and is smooth even when I have to feather it to get it in. I really don't want to take it to the dealership because i did my first 600 mile maintenance myself and they are an hour and a half away. Do you think it is an adjustment issue? Thanks for your help!

How many miles on your bike? Mine was a little hard at first to get into gear. Might just need some time to "break in"

Have you tried adjusting the shift lever? Just move it one notch to the left or right, and see if that helps.

If it doesn't go into first gear on first try then release the clutch and press again. It should slip in easily on the second clutch. Mine does this once in a while especially if the bike gets moved while on neutral and have the clutch pressed... I think. Can't remember exactly but you'll know what I mean when it happens. Maybe you pushed your bike while the clutch was pressed and was in other gears than first?

I'm not really sure how this works but it works every time when I clutch again. Hope this helps.

Bought my K8 brand new, had the same problem, don't think it completely goes away, but it does get better with more miles. Mine still does it ever once in awhile, just double clutch it and it will go into gear fine.

Exact same problem here... it was worst when I bought it in 08 but, it has gotten much better as the miles go on.

For me, 9 times out of 10, if I can't get it into first, I'll pop it in 2nd and then she goes nicely into 1st. For that 10th time, I roll it forward a couple of feet and then she goes in.

Try releasing the clutch and pressing again... works every time for me. I used to roll the bike a couple of feet like you until I used this method.

My '08 does it too. No worries, not the first bike I've had that has done it. Double clutch pull works every time...

yup my 08 Busa does it here and there my 04 and 07 Yamaha R1 did it since day one and alot more than the Busa.

Other option: release the clutch and apply pressure to the shifter. As the clutch starts to roll over the tranny, it will slip into gear. once the tranny has some wear, it will become a less and less frequent item.

my new 09 does it, just a little roll and it goes in, or downshift to first before you stop

my 08 and now my 09 does it and as others have said, just release the clutch reengage and drop in first. You get used to doing it.
