Kent - goto Control Panel -> Device Manager... Do you see any devices listed under 'Sound, video and game controllers'?

Yes,
Then : " sound, game and video controllers"
Then : "high definition audio device "
I then click on that and a window says " This device is working properly "

There is no sound and when I try to play a video or music it says that no speakers or head phones are pluged in ... but they are. :dunno:

It may sound silly but have you unplugged speakers and plugged em back in ?
Sometimes computers drop accessories that are plugged in .
If unplugged and plugged back in you may get it to work ?

Try uninstalling the device driver for the sound and the reboot. Reinstall with latest drivers. may need to download them first,But "Windows Update" might pick them up.

I went to Windows 7 for the MP4 support. Not liking it much. I feel your pain. My card internal media center with my SDHD card reader is not recognized by Windows 7. There are no device drivers for it. Windows XP recocognized it as a generic USB drive. The Windows Movie Maker for Windows 7 is a piece of crap. The old version will work, but even running under Windows 7 won't recognize MP4s. I guess the coodec isn't backward compatible. So I upgrade to Windows 7 for video editing and I can't read the SDHD cards they are on and I can't use the special effects add-on or the scripts I've developed over the past 4 years. This makes me want to buy a MAC.

I had the same problem...It is due to your PC being Windows 7 compatible, but not really made for it. Go to the HP website and find the drivers for your PC model...They most likely already have the drivers updated for this problem. They should anyways.

you can use real player to convert any movie files to any other type of movie file...you can download and use it for free...http://forms.real.com/real/player/download.html?type=rpsp_us_rpcom2. as for the audio in win 7 .... the volume bar is different ..u no longer have individual controls over each input and output but you can still right click on the volume icon and see if something is muted..which is my guess..also u can use the codec from real player or quick time or other and tell media player or movie maker to use that codec

I'm really discusted with everything MS has taken out of Windows 7 and the Windows Live apps. To me its a giant leap backwards. Looks like everything is made for the 13 year olds with their camera phones only wanting to put things on YouTube and Facebook. OK, that's may be the hot market right now any they want to cash in. Does it have to be one or the other. I'm finding the new apps basically useless and the old apps only marginally supported.

wait til ya see windows 2008  the server is pretty slick, hopefully the OS is something worthwhile after Win7 .... dunno that I'm totally sold on Win 7 but as I dont have a choice with the work laptop, I'm learning to find my way around :beerchug:

Well, Server 2008 R2 is slick... 2008 is just Vista.

I just got done upgrading all my domain controllers to 2008 R2... Next is servers..

Did you go to the website for your graphics card and see if they released new drivers for the WIN 7 OS?

No, I'm not sure what sound or graphics cards I have. It all came with the HP package and now I cant find my original driver disc's.

:(

( I recall seeing ATI in my back up files. )

Are you guys saying that I may need a graphics driver update? Video and graphics are working fine but no sound from anything on the pc right now.
